The 18th batch of Chinese (Sichuan) medical aid to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe recently launched the "Study on Caries Prevention and Effectiveness Evaluation in Children on Sao Tome Island". This project will last for one year, and medical professionals will conduct epidemiological surveys of dental caries as well as dental caries prevention and interventions for over 2,000 students in 6 regions on the island of Sao Tome. Yang Bo and Wang Yi, members of the West China School/Hospital of Stomatology medical team, are responsible for the clinical research project of children's caries prevention.

The clinical research project on children’s caries prevention was officially launched at Santana Elementary School in Sao Tome on November 9^th. Hu Bin, the Charg é d'affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Sao Tome, Mr. Dias, the designated representative of the Minister of Education of Santana; Mr. Cruz, the principal of Santana Elementary School; all members of the Chinese medical team, the China's anti-malaria and agricultural expert group in Sao Tome, and some teachers and students from Santana Elementary School participated in this event.

Dr. Hu Bin, Mr. Dias and Mr. Cruz of Santana Elementary School observed in Dr. Yang Bo’s workshop on oral health science education in Portuguese. Yang Bo introduced the significance of dental health, the importance of limiting sugar intake and brushing teeth through various ways such as childlike slide shows, interactive demonstrations, Q&A, and hands-on practice.

The project helps to raise local people and especially children’s awareness of oral health, reduce the incidence rate of dental caries, and promote the oral health of the people of Sao Tome and Principe.
