Recently, Academician Xingdong Zhang was awarded the Bioactive Materials (hereinafter referred to as BAM) Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding achievements in the field of biological materials science and technology.
BAM editor-in-chief Prof Yufeng Zheng and Prof Jian Yang awarded prize to Academician Xingdong Zhang
Yuliang Zhao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, president of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and professor at the National Centre for Nanoscience; Antonios Mikos, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, member of the National Academy of Medicine and the Academy of Engineering, professor at Rice University; Kristi Anseth, academician of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and the Arts and Sciences, and director of the Division of Bioengineering of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), professor at University of Colorado Kristi Anseth, Professor at Boulder, and YufengZheng, Professor at Peking University and Editor-in-Chief of BAM, delivered the award speeches respectively.
Academician Yuliang Zhao extended his heartfelt congratulations to Academician Xingdong Zhang and thanked for his long -term contribution to the field of biomaterials. He pointed out that as a world leader in the field of biomaterials and the founder of China’s biomaterials society, Zhang has pushed China’sbiomaterials study to the world.
Academician Antonios Mikos expressed Academician Xingdong Zhang was undoubtedly the most deserving recipient of this honour. He mentioned that academician Zhang proposed tissue-inducible biomaterials, which brought about a major breakthrough in biomaterials research and promoted the development of bioactive materials in numerous applications. Most importantly, Academician Zhang's outstanding contributions to basic research on biomaterials have been translated into medical devices that have benefited countless patients worldwide. At the same time, Academician Zhang's relentless pursuit of teaching has trained a large number of researchers, expanding the breadth and depth of his research contributions, and according to Academician Mikos, Academician Xingdong Zhang's career has set an excellent example of the perfect combination of translational research and educational mentoring, and serves as a benchmark for scholars in the field.
Academician Kristi Anseth, on behalf of NAE Bioengineering Division, thanked Academician Zhang for his contributions. She noted that Academician Zhang has convened and organised important international conferences that have led the way in the development of the field and allowed everyone to reflect on the major challenges facing the industry. She quoted a famous Chinese saying, "There is no better plan for a year than the planting of grain; there is no better plan for ten years than the cultivation of fruit trees; and there is no better plan for a lifetime than the cultivation of talent". And she praised Academician Zhang's contributions not only in terms of technological innovations, but also in terms of the far-reaching impact that his international leadership has had on the industry and the people who work in it.
On behalf of the Editorial Board of the journal, Prof Yufeng Zhang congratulated Academician Xingdong Zhang on awarded the BAM Lifetime Achievement Award. In his speech, he said that Academician Zhang haddedicated more than 40 years to biomaterials research work and he fully deserved the BAM Lifetime Achievement Award.
In his acceptance speech, Academician Xingdong Zhang expressed his gratitude to the university, his research team and his family and thanked to the honour awarded by BAM. He hoped to continue to work for the advancement of biomaterials science and engineering.
Bioactive Materials was founded in 2016, and its influence has achieved jumping growth since it was included in the SCIE search in 2019, and has been ranked first internationally in the field of JCR materials science, biomaterials for three consecutive years. The annual Bioactive Materials Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2020 to recognise excellence in research and development in the field. It is presented to the person judged to have demonstrated excellence and leadership in bioactive materials, including basic science and translation to practice. Academician Changsheng Liu, Academician Xuesi Chen and Academician Guillermo Ameer are the first three recipients.
