On the morning of August 19, China celebrated the nation’s “Doctors’ Day” and held the 13th Award Ceremony of the “Medal of Chinese Medical Doctor” in Beijing. 78 doctors, including Prof. Kang Yan of the Severe Case Medical Department of West China Hospital, won the“Medal of Chinese Medical Doctor”, which is the highest honor for Chinese medical workers.
On the day before the Doctors’ Day, Kang Yan led a critical care medicine unit of West China hospital to fight the Pandemic in Tibet by order of the COVID-19 medical treatment committee of the State Council. After the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, Kang Yan led a medical team of 130 members of West China hospital to help fight the Pandemic at the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University (Dongyuan), and took over 80 beds in two critical care units. Based on the actual situation of COVID-19 prevention and control and medical treatment, the medical team carried out "optimizing the management mode of medical quality control, establishing a graded diagnosis and treatment system for severe patients, and multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) for severe patients throughout the whole process", substantially reducing the mortality rate.
Kang Yan has been to the front line of national pandemic prevention 13 times since 2020. He has made great contributions to the fight against COVID-19. WCH's emergency medical team to Hubei won the title of "model of the times" by the Publicity Department of the CPC. Kang Yan has won a number of titles, such as "national excellent Communist Party member", "national advanced individual in the fight against COVID-19", "national advanced individual in the prevention and control of COVID-19 in the healthcare system" and "Chinese good doctor and Chinese good nurse special person in the fight against COVID-19". In addition, Kang Yan also served as the vice chairman of the critical care medicine branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the chairman of the professional committee of critical care medicine of the Sichuan Medical Association, and so on.
The “Medal of Chinese Medical Doctor” is the highest award in the medical profession approved by the former Ministry of Health. Its purpose is to commend and reward outstanding representatives of the medical profession who have made phenomenal contributions as well as excellent professional ethics. The award is given out once every two years, and this year marks the 13th award.
