On May 6th, the 289th China Engineering Science and Technology Forum on the Sustainable Development of Polymer Materials convened in Chengdu where 22 academicians gathered to discuss the sustainable development of polymer materials. Sichuan University was the sponsor of this forum. The people attending the forum included Vice Governor Xingping Yang of Sichuan Province; Deputy Secretary-General Quansheng Liu of the Provincial Government; Yanrong Li, academician and president of Sichuan University; Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians of Qunji Xue, Guangyao Zhou, Congkai Gao, Yongkang Hu, Pingkai Ouyang, Xingdong Zhang, Bi Shi, Xiangbao Chen, Jinping Zhai, Tianwei Tan, Xigao Jian, Chen Xuegeng Chen, Wenjiang Ding, Jianyong Yu, Zhongping Li, Qi Wang; Chinese Academy of Sciences academicians of Lina Zhang, Xiaoming Feng, Wantai Yang; Jin Xu, director of the first bureau of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Dong Liu, director of Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Department; Vice Director Xuehua Chen of Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Department; Director Xiaobin Ding of Chengdu Science and Technology Bureau; and more than 500 experts and scholars from universities, research institutes and industry associations in polymer science. Academician Yuzhong Wang and President of the General Assembly presided over the opening ceremony of the forum.
This forum would discuss the sources of raw materials, green synthesis and manufacture of polymer materials, environmental-friendly additives of polymer materials, effective recycling of waste polymer materials, and fully degradable polymer materials, so as to promote the sustainable development of polymer materials and related industries.
In his speech, Xingping Yang said that this forum not only promotes the research on the important orientation and technological frontier of polymer materials in the field, but also fits in well with the industrial development of Sichuan, which has high academic and practical significance. He hoped that experts would speak freely at this platform of the forum, find out the niche to solve the problem of sustainable development of polymer materials in order to assist the green development of Sichuan economy.
Jing Xu,on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, congratulated on the successful convening of the forum.He said that with the continuous development of organic polymer materials, the sources of raw materials, the safe use, environmental pollution and other issues have attracted a lot of attention. How to solve these problems scientifically is the core issue of sustainable development of polymer materials.During this forum, experts would conduct multi-directional, multi-angle, strategic and forward-looking discussions on the environmental pollution and recycling problems facings the development of polymer materials. They would explore solutions to the problems so as to promote the sustainable development of polymer materials.
Yanrong Li welcomed all attending this forum on behalf of Sichuan University. He said that China has become the world's largest producer and seller of polymer materials, involving a large number of practitioners in the field of polymer materials. And China is confronted with complex technological and application problems. These problems are not only related to the sustainable development of polymer materials industry, but also to national security, social livelihood and ecological and environmental protection. Many teachers, including academicians Yuzhong Wang and Qi Wang, have been conducting research on the recyclability and biodegradation of polymer materials.
Sichuan University is the very first university to set up the specialty of polymer material processing in China. Polymer has always been a strong subject of the university. Over the past 10 years, the total number of SCI papers SCU has published in the field of polymer ranks first in the world. At present, SCU is promoting the interdisciplinary integration, and constantly strengthening the cross-integration of polymer materials with chemistry, life sciences, pharmaceutical physics, information, environment, especially medical and information disciplines. The cross-integration will promote not only discipline development, but also the application of polymer materials, accelerating the green and sustainable growth of related industries. During the forum, academicians Tianwei Tan, Pingkai Ouyang, Yuzhong Wang, Lina Zhang, Yong Tang, Jinping Qu and Xuegeng Chen gave academic reports respectively. Experts and scholars at the meeting held discussions and exchanged ideas regarding the strategic research, technological research and development of polymer materials, and related industry standards, contributing to scientific and technological progress and industrial development.
