On the morning of May 9th, Zhigang Wang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Nanping Xu, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Ruiping Gao, vice director of the National Natural Science Foundation, investigated the development of SCU State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy.
Vice Governor Xingping Yang of Sichuan Province, Quansheng Liu, deputy secretary-general of the Provincial Government, Director Dong Liu of Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province, Junjie Cao, vice mayor of Chengdu, SCU Chairman Jianguo Wang of the university council, Director Yuquan Wei of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, and the heads of SCU relevant departments and West China Hospital, as well as the academic leaders of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, participated in the symposium. SCU Vice President Lin Zhang chaired this symposium.
At the symposium, Jianguo Wang, on behalf of the university, welcomed Minister Zhigang Wang and his delegation. He pointed out that SCU makes much account of the construction and development of West China School of Medicine, and is working hard at building West China medicine into a world first class medicine. Sichuan University has the advantages of multiple disciplines, and Medicine itself has a relatively complete system. The State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy undertakes the major task of national science and technology infrastructure construction of translational medicine.Upholding the coordinated development of the integration of industry, education and research, SCU has developed a complete innovation chain from basic research to manufacturing pharmaceuticals. As a result, SCU has made an array of innovative achievements.
Jianguo Wang indicated that being a state center to treat severe and difficult diseases in west China, SCU West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital undertakes the important task and historical responsibilities to provide first-class medical and health services to the west. With the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Sichuan Province and Chengdu, West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital has the capability and confidence in constructing a state laboratory centering round medicine. He hoped that the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation would remain steadfast in their concern and support for the reform and development of West China School of Medicine in Sichuan University. Yuquan Wei made a special report on the major scientific and technological infrastructure work of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy/Translational Medicine and the brief plan for the creation of the National Laboratory. He introduced how the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy had developed into an important base for bringing together high-level talents. He also introduced about the achievements of the laboratory and the measures to build a leading biotherapy laboratory in order to promote the development of medical and biological frontier technology. After listening to the report, Zhigang Wang highly appraised the achievements made in the construction and development of West China School of Medicine, especially the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy in Sichuan University. He affirmed the achievements made by the university in medical science research and expressed his gratitude to SCU scientific and technological workers for their contributions. He pointed out that being diligent in scientific research, Sichuan University partakes of a strong sense of innovation and profound insight into the development of science and technology. It provides an important support for the improvement of national scientific and technological innovation capacity in terms of the direction, focus and results of scientific research. Zhigang Wang said that healthy China needs the support of science and technology, which plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in health. As an important support and scientific research force in the national science and technology innovation system, the state key laboratory should focus on galvanizing scientific research capacity and improving the level of scientific and technological innovation in the future. He hoped that the State Key Laboratory of West China School of Medicine and the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, Sichuan University would concentrate on the field of sanitation and health, strengthen the construction of discipline system and interdisciplinary integration so as to produce more original results with international influence.
During the investigation, Zhigang Wang and his delegation inspected the operation of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy and the planning and construction of the national major scientific and technological infrastructure of translational medicine.
