Vice Chairman Zhu Chen of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the 2019 National Convention of Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure Alliance of Translational Medicineat Sichuan University on May 11th. The leaders who attended this convention included Li Yin, vice secretary of Sichuan Provincial Committee and governor of Sichuan Province; Qing Yang, Director of Science and Education Department of the National Health Commission; Chaozhi Lei, director of Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Education; Zhulin Shen, vice director of High Technology Department of the National Development and Reform Commission; Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians of Saijuan Chen, Xiangmei Chen, Zhinan Chen, Chen Wang, Jing Cheng; Chairman Jianguo Wang of SCU university council; SCU vice presidents Taiping Hou, Lin Zhang, and the main leaders of relevant units of the state, provinces and municipalities. Director Weimin Li ofWest China School of Medicine and West China Hospital, Sichuan University, and Director Yuquan Wei of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, SCU served as Chairman-in-Office of this convention.
Jianguo Wang first welcomed the leaders and guests of the conference on behalf of the university, thanking everybody for their long-standing concern and support for Sichuan University over the years. He said that West China Medicine is a prestigious discipline of Sichuan University, Sichuan Province and even China. Sichuan University gives high priority to the development of West China Medicine and is determined to build West China Medicine into a national medical center, turning West China Medicine into a world first-class medicine.
Qing Yang, Chaozhi Lei and Zhulin Shen respectively put forward requirements for the construction of major national scientific and technological infrastructure of translational medicine from the perspective of national authorities. They hoped that the participating work units would give full play to their advantages, speed up project construction, and promote the development of translational medicine, providing strong scientific and technological bulwark for the health of the whole people in the construction of healthy China.
Li Yin congratulated on the opening of the convention on behalf of the provincial government. He said that the provincial government of Sichuan Province attaches great importance to the construction of translational medical research facilities in Sichuan. Next, we would continue to accelerate the construction of independent innovation system, make full use of the advantages of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, and build a leading innovation platform of translational medicine. We would strive to build this platform into a world-class innovation base and talent training center.
In his speech, Zhu Chen pointed out that translational medicine has become an important way to promote the development of sanitation and health cause by means of scientific progress. We should strengthen the integration of disciplines, improve the mechanism of academic evaluation and achievement sharing to promote interdisciplinary cooperation, leading to an organic fusion of basic medicine and clinical practice. We should consolidate our resources and research endeavors in order to treat chronic diseases, infectious diseases and the prevention and control of endemic diseases. We should also make up for weaknesses in gerontology, promote the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases, and strive to develop new drugs. Furthermore, we ought to pay attention to innovation of operation system and mechanism, protect the rights of individuals in experiment, and accelerate the study of medical ethics and morality and the improvement of legal and regulatory systems. Moreover, we need to deepen international exchange and cooperation, and join efforts in building a “health silk road”, bringing benefits to all mankind.
At the same time, the conference held the second "Translational Medicine Award" ceremony to award experts and scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the research of translational medicine, as well as clinicians and researchers who have made breakthrough innovative achievements. Academicians of Saijuan Chen, Xiangmei Chen, Chen Wang, Jing Cheng and Yuquan Wei, Professor Xiaokun Li of Wenzhou Medical University and SCU Professor Qiyong Gong made high-level academic reports respectively.
The national major scientific and technological infrastructure of translational medicine is one of the 16 major scientific and technological infrastructures prioritized during the 12th Five-Year Plan period in China, relying on Shanghai Jiaotong University ( Ruijin Hospital ), Peking Union Medical College Hospital, General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army of China, Air Force Medical University and Sichuan University ( West China Hospital ), respectively, to build five national translational medicine with different emphasis on contents and research directions. Sichuan University ( West China Hospital ) is a major national scientific and technological infrastructure for translational medicine. It mainly aims at major diseases such as tumors, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, studies and develops biotherapy technologies and clinical translational applications such as cancer immunotherapy, gene therapy, vaccines, tissue engineering and stem cells. In addition, it will build an internationally advanced biotherapy translational medicine research base which is highly integrated and open to sharing.
