On May 18th , the International Museum Day, the opening ceremony of China's main venue was held at Xi’an city. Sichuan University Museum isamongthe list of the officially announced fifth-batch national-level museums.
Sichuan University Museum was built in 1914, which is one of the museums with the longest history in China and is the earliest museum established in Southwest China. It is a comprehensive museum integrating collection, conservation,research, exhibition and education. In the 1940s, Sichuan University Museum was known as "the most perfect museum in Southwest China" for its rich collections and great management. Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of scholars, the museum has a wide variety of cultural relics, including more than 85,000 historical artefacts, more than 140,000 animal specimens and more than 840,000 plant specimens, which together constitute a museum hall with unique characteristics of Southwest China, where humanities and nature, science and art are blended.
Over the past hundred years, Sichuan University Museum has accumulated a very rich collection. There are more than 85,000 pieces of cultural relics, including stone carvings, paintings and calligraphy, ceramics, bronzes, ancient coins, ancient seals, embroideries, lacquer ware, topographies and dozens of other categories, of which the collection of paintings and calligraphy, ceramics, art carvings and ethnic cultural relics and folk cultural relics are the most distinctive, which is known as the domestic literature and art circles.
The award of national-level museum is not only an affirmation of Sichuan University Museum's long-standing work in cultural relics collection, conservation, research and education, but also a recognition of the achievements we have gained in promoting the inheritance and innovation of Chinese outstanding traditional culture. As a national museum, Sichuan University Museum will shoulder heavier responsibilities and missions, continue to deepen research, enrich exhibitions, provide the public with more diversified and in-depth cultural experiences, and contribute more wisdom and strength to promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding of civilisations.
