The International Conference on Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems

The 2022 International Conference on Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems, of which our university was one of the organizers, was held in Chengdu on December 11. More than 250 guests from UNESCO, the United Nations Disaster Reduction Agency, the United Nations Development Programme, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and other disaster early warning fields participated in the meeting either in person or online. They exchanged ideas and discussed topics such as multi hazard early warning technologies, policies, regulations and management. Lin Shucheng, vice chairman of Sichuan Committee of the CPPCC, Li Yanrong, President of Sichuan University, Xia Zehan, representative of the UNESCO Representative Office in China, Diana Mosquera Calle, deputy director of the Asia Pacific Regional Office of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Soichiro Yasukawa,program specialist on disaster risk reduction (DRR) at Natural Sciences Sectors of UNESCO, Shan Chunchang, the former deputy director of the Expert Committee of the National Committee for Disaster Reduction and former Counsellor of the State Council, Guo Guizhen, director of the Comprehensive Risk Monitoring and Early Warning Center of the National Disaster Reduction Center of the Ministry of Emergency Management, and other domestic and foreign experts attended the conference.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, Li Yanrong pointed out that natural disasters occur frequently around the world, and Sichuan is a region prone to geological disasters. It is of great significance to further improve the ability to deal with major disasters and accelerate the progress and wide application of disaster early warning technology. The university should give full play to the foundation and characteristics of disaster prevention and mitigation, and continue to promote the development of disaster early warning technology.

Dr. Wang Tun said in his speech that the multi hazard early warning systems of Sichuan Intelligent Manufacturing and Chengdu Intelligent Manufacturing had, by the end of November, issued early warnings against 974 natural disasters, including 75 destructive earthquakes, as well as landslides, mud rock flows, settlements, mountain torrents, mountain fires, etc. Gretchen Kalonji mentioned in her speech that it is very important to integrate disaster early warning into college education. At the same time, health problems, natural disaster risks and other risks are interrelated and need to be explored in a multidisciplinary way.
Experts in attendance said that the meeting would help exchanges and innovations in the fields of multi hazard early warning technologies, applications, policies and regulations at home and abroad. The conference urges countries to realize the theme of this year's International Day for Disaster Prevention and Reduction, "Early Warning, Early Action for All", that is, "disaster warning is a basic public service", and jointly create a safer community with a shared future for mankind.
