On Nov.18, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the name list of newly elected academicians in 2021. Xu Weilin(许唯临), executive vice president of Sichuan University and director of the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, was elected academician of CAE. RuanYongbin, an SCU alumnus, was elected academician of CAS; and Xu Weilin(徐卫林)(SCU alumnus) and Huang Dianzhong (SCU alumnus), were elected academicians of CAE. Moreover, Chul B. Park, a high-end foreign professor of the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering of SCU, was elected as a foreign academician of CAE.
Xu Weilin(许唯临)
Dr. Xu Weilin(许唯临) is professor, doctoral supervisor, executive vice president of Sichuan University. He is also director of the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, executive director of China Society for Hydropower Engineering, executive director of the Chinese National Committee on Large Dams, and international consultant of the International Consortium on Geo-Disaster Reduction.
Xu Weilin has long been engaged in theoretical research, technical development and engineering application of high dam hydraulics. Being an academic leader in the field of high dam hydraulics in China, he has put forward the hydraulic meso analysis theory, invented the graded erosion prevention technology of high dam engineering, and developed the local regulation technology of flood discharge of high dams. Xu Weilin has presided over scientific research tasks such as the national 973 Plan, the national science and technology support plan, the National Natural Science Foundation projects, the second national Qinghai-Tibet scientific survey and so forth. His honors include but not limited to the following: one second prize of the national technological invention award ( ranking 1st ), two second prizes of the national scientific and technological progress award (ranking 1st and 2nd respectively), eight first prizes of the provincial and ministerial level awards (ranking 1st in four of the prizes) and Ho Leung Ho Lee Scientific and Technological Innovation Award. Moreover, Xu Weilin has obtained 47 invention patents (20 ranked the first) and seven of his technologies were included in 5 design specifications. In addition, he has published 86 SCI papers and 4 monographs. The results have been applied to more than 80 projects, including 11 high dams with a height of more than 200 meters in China. He has contributed to the flood discharge safety of high dams.
Ruan Yongbin
Ruan Yongbin was an undergraduate in the Department of Mathematics of Sichuan University from September 1978 to June 1982, and a master student in Basic Mathematics of the Department of Mathematics of Sichuan University from September 1982 to June 1985. He received a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. Ruan Yongbin won the Sloan Research Fellowship in 1995, the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars (class B) in 1998, and Vilas Associates Award in 1999. He became the Chair Professor of the important talent program of the Ministry of Education in Sichuan University in 2000, and the Clay Senior Scholar Program scholar in 2006. Ruan Yongbin was Chief Scientist of the platform "985" of Sichuan University from 2005 to 2009 and director of the Changjiang Mathematics Center of Sichuan University (Overseas). In 2015, he was elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
Xu Weilin (徐卫林)
Prof. Xu Weilin conducted his postdoctoral research in the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering of Sichuan University from June 1997 to March 1999. He has been engaged in the research of advanced spinning technology and textiles for a long time and has garnered outstanding achievements. He led the development of projects such as the national flag of Chang'e 5 and the high temperature resistant elastic sealing device of Mars landing patrol. He has long cooperated with domestic and foreign enterprises and research institutions to actively promote the industrialized application of scientific research achievements.
Huang Dianzhong
Prof. Huang Dianzhong of China Information Technology Security Evaluation Center has been engaged in information and electronic engineering management for a long time. He graduated from the College of Electronics and Information Engineering of SCU with a master's degree in Electronics and Information Engineering.
Chul B. Park
Born in May 1960, Dr. Chul B. Park is a professor of the University of Toronto, and fellow of boththe Academy of Science and the Academy of Engineering of the Royal Society of Canada. He is also a high-end foreign professor of Sichuan University. In addition, Chul B. Park is a member of the International Advisory Board of Sichuan University, director of the International Polymer Foam Center of Sichuan University and University of Toronto. Prof.Park is internationally renowned as the founder of supercritical fluid-polymer foaming and processing technology. Since 2010, he has established long-term cooperative relationship with the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering of SCU and jointly undertaken major international cooperation projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.Consequently, he won the Tianfu Friendship Award by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province.
