On November 25, the Academician Forum on the Development Strategy of Medical Devices in the New Situation and/the 60th Anniversary Meeting of Prof. Zhang Xingdong(Hereinafter referred to as the Forum) was held in SCU’s International Academic Exchange Center. Zhang Xingdong, Known as "the world leader in biomaterials research" and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE), and 500 leaders of relevant government departments, Chinese and foreign academicians, well-known experts and scholars attended the Forum.
On behalf of the university, Chairman Wang Jianguo expressed congratulations and thanks to Zhang Xingdong for his 60 years of teaching. He said that Biomedical Engineering is the "double first-class" discipline and "peak discipline" that SCU focuses on. A series of landmark results have been achieved, and a new theory of "Tissue Inducing Biomaterials" is proposed and established, which leads the development of biomaterials science in the world. Zhang Xingdongis the first in the world to systematically prove that lifeless porous calcium phosphate ceramics can induce bone formation without the use of living cells or bone growth factors. As a result, he is acclaimed as the “world leader in biomaterials research”. Sichuan University will stand by the "four orientations" of scientific research, and give priority and support to the development of Biomedical Engineering in order to build a world-class Biomedical Engineering, and help construct a "healthy China".
In his speech, Jiang Deyuan, director of the Department of Medical Device Registration and Administration of the National Medical Products Administration(NMPA), said that Zhang Xingdong has always practiced the "scientist spirit" during his 60 years of teaching. He has achieved great success in biomedical materials research, making outstanding contributions to the development of this field. He indicated that drugs and medical devices are important guarantees for the development of "healthy China", and biomedical materials, as a growing industry, has great development opportunities. He hoped that the experts and scholars attending the meeting would give full play to their wisdom, offer ideas and suggestions, and contribute to the development of China's biomaterials industry and medical device industry.
In his speech, vice governor Li Gang said that medical devices are strategic products concerning national public health and safety. Sichuan province will vigorously support breakthroughs in key technologies in the field of medical devices and biomedicine, improve the industrial chain, and build a medical and health industrial base while focusing on basic research which are led by academicians. He hoped that Zhang Xingdong and other experts and scholars would continue to contribute and provide suggestions for the development of medical device industry of Sichuan province.
Xue Qunji, academician of CAE, said in his speech that Zhang Xingdong is a pioneer and leader in the field of biomaterials in China, and he has made important contributions to the development of biomaterials. Zhang Xingdong holds important offices in biomaterials institutions at home and abroad year round. He has contributed to the international exchanges and cooperation in the field of biomaterials, and greatly raised the influence of Chinese biomaterials in the world.
Professor Wang Yunbing, director ofthe National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials, reported on the development and construction of the center. In their speeches, Ge Junbo, academician of CAS and Prof. Chen Chuanhong congratulated Zhang Xingdong on his 60th anniversary of teaching, and made suggestions and contributions to the development of the Center.
At the meeting, a ceremony was conducted to inaugurate the College of Biomedical Engineering, Sichuan University; Sichuan University Invitation of Academicians and Distinguished Professors; and APEC Training Center of Excellence For Regulatory Science(CoE). Wang Jianguo and Zhang Xingdong inaugurated the College of Biomedical Engineering. President Li Yanrong presented letters of appointment to Tu hailing and other academicians, as well as distinguished professors such as Xiao Jiahua, Zou Xueming, Zhou Hui, Zheng Pan, Zi Zhenjun and Xie Jiangbing. Jiang Deyuan; He Li,vice president of APEC regulatory steering committee; and SCU vice president Zhang Lin unveiled the plaque for the Training Center of Excellence.
The video "Spanning 60 years - to the 60th anniversary of Zhang Xingdong's teaching" was played at the meeting in commemoration of Zhang Xingdong's 60 years of teaching, which reviewed the important contributions Zhang Xingdong had made to the training of talent and scientific research over the past 60 years. Professor Wu Yao, deputy director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Sichuan University, spoke as a student representative of Zhang Xingdong. She expressed her gratitude for the cultivation and support from Zhang Xingdong and paid her tribute to Zhang for his scientific research spirit which was characterized by ceaseless endeavors to innovate and hard work.
In his speech, President Li Yanrong said that Zhang Xingdong is an outstanding scientist who has been constantly exploring original research from 0 to 1. He has led the development of biomedical materials research in the world and laid an important foundation for the establishment and development of biomaterials science in Sichuan University. Meanwhile, Zhang Xingdong is also an excellent strategic scientist. From the establishment of the National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials of Sichuan University to the establishment of the College of Biomedical Engineering, in his capacity of chairman of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials to president of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, he has been making plans and giving consultative reports for the country, leading and promoting the development of biomedical materials. During his 60 years of teaching, Zhang Xingdong has been an excellent teacher and trained a large number of biomaterials talent for our nation.
