The Ninth Congress of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology was held on 16th and 17th of April in Chengdu. Qinghua Peng, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, gave instructions to extend congratulations on the convening of the congress on behalf of the provincial Party Committee and sincere greetings to all scientific and technological workers. Jingpeng Huai, party secretary and executive vice president of China Association for Science and Technology ( CAST ), Li Yin, deputy secretary of the provincial Party Committee and governor of Sichuan Province, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech respectively. Xiaogang Deng, deputy secretary of the provincial Party Committee of the CPC, attended the closing ceremony and made requests, on behalf of the provincial Party Committee and the provincial government, to the new provincial science and technology association leadership.
Yanrong Li, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Sichuan University, was elected president of the Ninth Committee of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology. Academician Bi Shi of Sichuan University, Professor Weimin Li, President of West China School of Medicine /West China Hospital, Sichuan University were elected as part-time vice president. Xiaogang Deng presented the honorary president's certificate to SCU Academician Heping Xie, who was president of the Eighth Committee of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology.
In his capacity of president of the new provincial science and technology association, Yanrong Li made a speech at the closing ceremony. He thanked the provincial Party Committee, provincial government and representatives for their trust, and paid high tribute to the leaders at all levels who have long attached importance to and supported the work of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology as well as all the members of the Eighth Committee, especially President Heping Xie.
He pointed out that at present, Sichuan is in a critical period of transformation and development, innovation and leapfrogging development, which not only puts forward higher requirements for scientific and technological work in the province, but also provides a broader career platform for scientific and technological workers and scientific and technological associations at all levels. Yanrong Li said that the provincial association for science and technology will inherit and carry forward the good traditions and style of the previous committees of the provincial association for science and technology, and strive to play a better role in promoting the prosperity and development of science and technology, accelerating the popularization and outreaching of science and technology. It will also promote the growth and improvement of scientific and technological talents as well as the integration of science, technology and economy. As President of the association for science and technology, Yanrong Li said that he would unite and lead the vast number of scientific and technological workers throughout the province, and strive to create a new situation for the cause of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology. The association would strive to become a pioneer in promoting innovation-driven and high-quality development in Sichuan and make greater contribution to pushing the governance and revitalization of Sichuan Province to a new stage.
