On May 21st, the Fifth SCU International Young Scholars Forum was held at the International Academic Exchange Center of the university. Excellent young talents from top universities, such as Harvard University, Yale University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Singapore National University, participated in this forum.
On behalf of the university, President Yanrong Li welcomed all young scholars who had travelled long distances to attend the forum. He had a candid discussion with young scholars regarding ‘What kind of university is Sichuan University?’ and ‘Why is Sichuan University the right place for a career? He said that Sichuan University is one of the earliest, largest, most comprehensive and highest-level universities in China. The university has decided on the development plan of "running the best medicine, first-class liberal arts, science and new engineering". Therefore, Sichuan University is longing for talents of all kinds. He expounded on two aspects when speaking of "why do I need to choose Sichuan University, please give me a reason". First, Sichuan University is a good platform conducive to young scholars for their rapid growth and career development. Sichuan University has a good variety of well-developed liberal arts, science, engineering medicine disciplines, which provides a good support for scholars to conduct interdisciplinary research. So long as young talents have good academic ideas, the university will be able to support everyone in making their very first achievement in their careers. Currently, the university has a very low talent ratio, which provides a huge space for the collective development of young talents. Second, the city of Chengdu provides the best guarantee of a happy life for young talents. Chengdu is one of the happiest cities in the country, with high tolerance, low cost of living and high quality of life. Moreover, Sichuan University has a good subsidiary system of children's education from kindergartens to primary and secondary schools, as well as high-quality medical resources at West China Hospital. It offers competitive salaries in comparison with those in universities in East China. Young talents can not only promote their career, but also enjoy a happy life.
Vice Minister Su Wen of the United Front Work Department of Sichuan, introduced the economic and social development, entrepreneurship and living environment of Sichuan Province, and the great importance attached by the provincial government of Sichuan Province to the work of talents. Director Jianxian Liu of Talents Work Office of Sichuan Provincial Party Committee Organization Department, and Vice-Minister Chongshi Peng of Chengdu Municipal Party Committee Organization Department, introduced the basic situation of Sichuan Province and Chengdu City respectively, as well as the multiple development opportunities and regional talent support policies in Sichuan Province and the city of Chengdu.
Academician Bi Shi introduced to the participants the unique advantages of scientific research in Sichuan University. Based on his own experience, he put forward some suggestions for returning young scholars: to maintain a low key when taking up their posts, accumulate vigorously and strive for "academic titles", but not to overuse academic titles.
With the strong support of the "Double Hundred Talents Project" in our university, SCU has added eight new "Youth Talents of Four Categories". At this forum, the university held a special ceremony for scholars of the "Double Hundred Talents Project" who were selected into the national talent project. Yanrong Li awarded certificates of honor to the candidates.
Bin Liang introduced to the participants the school's history and development status, and the support system for scholars in particular.
During the exchange session, young scholars’ representatives Yang Zhang of School of Life Sciences and Hang Wang of the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering shared their work, life at Sichuan University as well as the support they had received from Sichuan University. They are both members of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts (AKA“Thousand People Program”). Jianpeng Sheng, a researcher at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, expressed, on behalf of the participating scholars, confidence in their development in China and their sincere intention to join Sichuan University so as to achieve their self-fulfillment while serving the motherland.
"Sichuan University International Young Scholars Forum" is an important platform for the school to promote "Global Talent Convergence Project" and "Double Hundred Talents Project". Since 2017 when the First Forum was held, more than 500 outstanding young scholars from more than 30 countries and regions around the world have been invited to work together for the construction of "double first-class" status. The three-day International Young Scholars Forum attracted 684 outstanding young scholars from all over the world. The university selected 148 outstanding young talents to attend this forum. The forum has set up school forums, "Youth Thousand People", disciplines forums, campus tour to enhance the participants' understanding of various talent policies and the development of Sichuan University so that the scholars can love and choose Sichuan University.
