On Feb. 26, 2020, the General Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the establishment of 13 national applied mathematics centers, including Sichuan Applied Mathematics Center.
With Sichuan University being the leader, Sichuan Applied Mathematics Center will draw upon the resources of Mathematics Science and mathematical talents at Sichuan University. The center will work closely with relevant universities, scientific research institutes and key enterprises of Sichuan Province in its development. Stressing industrial application orientation, Sichuan Applied Mathematics Center will build five application research platforms for the needs of information technology, equipment manufacturing, new energy industry, biomedicine, financial law and other fields. Consequently, three platforms will be constructed. “ Mathematics and Application ” is a platform to explore and establish an innovation mechanism conducive to mathematical application by coordinating three types of experts: mathematicians, experts of other scientific fields and entrepreneurs.This platform breaks work unit boundaries and academic discipline barriers. “ Mathematics-for-Application ” is to guide the research of applied mathematics in accordance with issues and needs. “ Mathematics into Application ” is a platform to develop ways of application in order to apply mathematics in engineering projects and industrialize mathematical research findings. This platform is expected to better utilize mathematics to support the innovation and development of Sichuan Province and even the whole country.
Sichuan University will provide vigorous support for the center to carry out various works in accordance with the development law of mathematics discipline. The university will also ensure the construction of physical spaces, its operation and funds for scientific research. Furthermore, Sichuan University will strive to build the center into an important base for high-level mathematical application research and the cultivation of mathematical talents.
