SCU New Technologies Are Highlighted in Major Media

Date:Mar 14, 2020

In containing the spread of the novel coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) , Sichuan University has launched an emergency response project for novel coronavirus pneumonia. Galvanizing the research technologies and talents of multiple disciplines, Sichuan University has so far developed new technologies to aid the fight agasint the COVID-19 epidemic. The novel coronavirus pneumonia test chip, remote CT scanning, epidemic prevention and precision control system, etc are reported by major media such as the People’s Daily, China.org.cn, CGTN and Xinhua News Agency continuously, arousing widespread attention.

Necleic Acid Test Chip

In collaboration with Chengdu Capital Biotechnology and Tsinghua University, experts from West China Hospital of Sichuan University have developed the “ respiratory virus ( 6 viruses ) nucleic acid chip ( isothermal amplification chip ) ”, which detects six respiratory viruses including novel coronavirus simultaneously. This kit got approvedby National Medical Products Administration as a second batchof emergency medical devices for novel coronavirus ( registration certificate number: GXZZ 20203400178 ) on Feb. 22. It will be shipped out without delay to provide rapid, accurate and effective diagnoses for patients and front-line medical staff. The test chip was devised and developed under the supervision of Mr. Nanshan Zhong, academician and director of the National Health Commission ( NHC ) high-level expert group and Ms. Lanjuan Li, academician and member of the NHC high-level expert group. It can detect simultaneously six respiratory viruses, including the novel coronavirus, within 90 minutes using secretions of a patient’s nasal and throat swabs. Up to now, this technology has received 15 patents and seven science and technology awards.Several hospitals have contacted for reservation upon the successful development of the kit. After being approved, these kits have provided urgent support to major hospitals all over the country overnight, especially in Wuhan and other areas with serious epidemic situation, such as Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology ( central court area ), Wuhan Union Hospital, Wuhan Huo-shen-shan Hospital and Hubei General Hospital.

5G Remote Consultation

Recently, medical experts from the Radiology Department and Information Center of West China Hospital conducted remote CT scans of three COVID-19 patients in Ganzi Prefecture of Sichuan Province. CT scans are very popular as a form of diagnosis especially with the novel coronavirus outbreak. This has been the first remote CT diagnosis case nationwide by virtue of 5G technology. On March 2nd, West China Hospital medical personnel carried out remote CT scans of COVID-19 patients at Huangzhou General Hospital, Huanggang, Hubei Province. This was the first trans provincial novel coronavirus pneumonia diagnosis on the 5G remote consultation platform. Through remote 5G transmissions, doctors are now able to control the CT scanners in remote hospitals from a far distance on a real time basis. They can standardize the checks and quality of the diagnoses across the board to prevent unnecessary repeated examinations. More importantly, the doctors can optimize the image quality and dosage of radiation released on a patient.

3D Facial Recognition System

As companies start to resume business, employees will wear masks to return to work. They will get manual checks for body temperature at close range and clock in by scanning palms or finger prints at work. How to minimize the risk of infection has become an issue of concern. Wisesoft has developed with a research team of Sichuan University a 3D facial recognition system that can identify people wearing masks. Unlike traditional two-dimensional systems, the new system can identify people with stains on their faces and wearing masks by means of the dynamic analysis of 3D modeling. This system has a 98 percent accuracy rate per thousand people wearing masks according to Xuebin Lv, an employee of the company. “ It can also collect the body temperature data of the identified people to reduce unnecessary contact among personnel,” said Lv. Furthermore, this system can control and regulate personnel’s access to their work places according to their different work schedules, substantively reducing close contacts between people and preventing crowding.

More than 140 sets of the system have been installed across West China Second University Hospital. The company plans to manufacture over one thousand sets of systems in the next two months. This system will help reduce the physical contact between people coming in and going out of the registration places, thus reducing the risk of infection and containing the spread of viruses.
