Recently, the United Front Department of the Central Committee, the CPC Publicity Department, the Ministry of Education and the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China jointly issued a document, announcing the first batch of the national research bases for forging the Chinese national community awareness. Ten work units, including Sichuan University, have made to the list.
This research base will be the sixth national research platform of liberal arts at our university. The other five are Sichuan University China Center for South Asia Studies, China Tibetology Research Institute, Sichuan University Research Center of Popular Culture, Institute of South Asia Studies, Sichuan University, and Institute of Taoism and Religious Culture, Sichuan University. The establishment of this platform recognizes the great accomplishments that SCU has made in serving the social and economic development of the Western ethnic areas. It also affirms the academic contributions that SCU has made, in its capacity of the largest comprehensive university in the western region, in the fields of Tibetan studies, ethnic history, and ethnology over a long period of time.
" The Research Base for Forging the Chinese National Community Awareness ” is an institute established by the four ministries of the United Front Department of the Central Committee, the CPC Publicity Department, the Ministry of Education and the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China. In applying for the establishment of this research base, Sichuan University took the application with the utmost seriousness and made arrangements carefully. The university conducted many hearings, collecting ideas from experts. It finally decided to rely on the national key research institute of SCU China Tibetology Research Institute. Furthermore, SCU would invite Professor Suo Shi, to be the head expert and Professor Wei Huo to be the director of this research base. After strict preliminary examination, second examination, defense and on-site investigation and inspection by experts from three ministries and one commission, Sichuan University finally excelled in the fierce competition of more than 50 applicants and became one of the first 10 research bases for forging the awareness of the Chinese national community.
Under the guidance of the three ministries and one commission of China, the base will follow the direct leadership of Sichuan University. It will capitalize on its advantages, explore and innovate so as to meet the requirements of forging the awareness of the Chinese national community, deepening the Chinese ethnic research in the new era.
