On June 22, SCU held its Commencement and Degree Awarding Ceremony on Wangjiang Campus. The ceremony was conducted in two ways: offline and online simultaneously. 8,106 undergraduate and 6,069 graduate students have completed their studies in Sichuan University and will set out on a new journey.
Chairman Jianguo Wang of the university council; President Yanrong Li; Heping Xie, Xingdong Zhang, Yuzhong Wang, and Qi Wang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Shunqing Cao, Benhe Zhong, Shichuang Zhan and Wei Huo, distinguished professors of Sichuan University; the leaders of individual departments and colleges, and the representatives of graduates attended the ceremony. Vice President Bin Liang presided over the ceremony.
The ceremony started with the playing of the National Anthem. Teachers and students stood up and sang the song in chorus, ushering in the exciting and unforgettable moment in life.
“Explore diligently while eyeing the world, forge ahead while keeping family and motherland in mind.” said Professor Fengming Luo of West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital when talking about the duties and social responsibility that SCU graduates have had for the country and the nation. He further expressed his expectations of the graduates to the effect: “Always remain kind-hearted in your future work and study, stay curious about the unknown world, and maintain a hardworking mindset for your career; have a clear plan for a better life, and be determined to move forward bravely.”
"Sichuan University makes each of us a person with infinite possibilities.” said Peng Zhang, a graduate from the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, on behalf of all the graduating students. She said that we live in a new era and have social responsibility on our shoulders. We would always follow in the footsteps of our predecessors, and jointly uphold the motto of "As rivers run to the sea, united we are strong." Being young and hardworking, we would pave the way for national rejuvenation, and contribute to the construction of the motherland.
With the audience giving enthusiastic applause, President Li, on behalf of the university, extended sincere congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2020 graduates, and made a speech entitled "How to Grasp Your Future in a Complex World". He said that the SCU faculty and students have never been absent whenever the country and the nation encounter major crises. SCU’s West China School of Medicine (West China Hospital) has made significant contributions not only to Wuhan and Hubei, but also to Chengdu and Sichuan, as well as to the people of the whole country this time. On the occasion of graduation, the president earnestly said to the Class of 2020 graduates: "Your vision will affect how far you can go. Your pursuit of excellence will have an effect on how high you can reach, and whether you can use simple language to explain the complex and profound truth clearly determines whether you have a wonderful life. This is not only the soft power, but also the hard work for our students to become outstanding! "Finally, the president said to the students emotionally that we have a common name, "the people of Sichuan University". No matter where you are, in whatever situation, and whatever happens to you in the future, Sichuan University will always be your home.
Afterwards, the university administrators, academicians and distinguished professors presented degree certificates to the representatives of graduates.
The ceremony concluded in the passionate song of “Sing in Praise of the Motherland”. The Class of 2020 graduates are like seeds that SCU has cultivated. Carrying the genes of Sichuan University and being empowered with knowledge, they will travel long distances, settle down across the motherland, survive and thrive on their journey of a new life.
This graduation ceremony is the first one conducted simultaneously offline and online in the history of Sichuan University. It has 40 branch venues in 40 different schools and colleges.
