SCU’s 2024 Lunar New Year Fete Was a Success

The jade rabbit leaves a clear glow every month, and the golden dragon soars into the clouds to send good luck. In order to enrich the campus life of students who spent the winter vacation in the university, SCU held a fun park outing at the Chinese Culture Institute on Wangjiang Campus. Liu Xiaohu, Deputy Secretary of the university Party committee, heads of relevant departments and divisions of the university as well as teachers and students staying on campus gathered together to welcome the Lunar New Year on February 2.

At 1 pm, the students came to the entrance of the Wenhua Activity Center to pick up activity maps and started a fun oriented park tour for the Chinese New Year. They answered questions concerning the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, recalling the arduous journey of the past and aspiring to make progress in the present day. The holidaymakers blew sugar figures, made dumplings, drew sugar paintings, and made Sanzi while tasting the "New Year's flavor" from across China. Participants also picked up childhood memories in activities such as topping-on, hopscotch, rolling iron rings, and throwing sandbags, immersing themselves in traditional sports such as wooden shooting, pitching pots, cuju, and mini dragon dancing, as well as tree climbing and gliding. During the activity, the students also explored landscapes such as the three Wangjiang pavilions, the statue of Mr. Zhang Hongyuan, and the statue of Mr. Zhang Quan. Finally, the students completed 75 auspicious dragon puzzles, received customized red scarves for the New Year, and proceeded to the Chinese Culture Institute for the New Year's Eve celebration.

The Spring Festival Gala kicked off in the brightly lit Chinese Culture Research Institute at 3 P.M. The erhu performance of "Happy New Year" and the chorus of "Sheng Sheng Man" let everyone to experience the graceful and melodious traditional music. To the accompaniment of the song "Me and My Motherland", the teachers performed the Tai Chi 24 styles, showcasing the strength and softness of traditional Chinese martial arts. The "Sichuan Opera Face Changing" demonstrated the open-minded nature of the Bashu people, who can express their emotions freely. Chinese traditional cultural arts such as shadow puppetry, panda and dragon acrobatics, and long mouthed teapot tea art left students overwhelmed with excitement.

The entire event features 49 locations, 75 auspicious dragon puzzles, and a total score of 128 points, symbolizing the 75th anniversary of the founding of New China in 1949 and the 128-year history of Sichuan University. The Students learned about the "Five Histories" in the fun garden tour and happy get-together, appreciated the China-Chic in the new year, and got to know the New Year customs.

The university has organized Spring Festival park tours for students who stay on campus during winter vacation since 2015. This year is the 10th year. The event has developed from the initial garden party to a comprehensive activity of "Five Educations" covering fun orientation, New Year customs, New Year China-Chic, New Year food and others. In addition, the university also provides living subsidies for students staying in school, and the "one cent" New Year's Eve dinner. Students can take part in a series of activities on New Year's Eve, including making dumplings and watching the Spring Festival Gala.
