On the evening of December 31, SCU held its New Year Gala “Sing for the New Era and Set Sail for a New Journey” in the Art Theatre of Jiang’an campus.

Chairman Wang Jianguo of the university council; President Li Yanrong; Feng Xiaoming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, distinguished professors Cao Shunqing, Zhan Shichuang and Huo Wei; university leaders Cao Ping, Liang Bin, Yao Leye and Guo Yong, college and school leaders of the university; and representatives of teachers and students attended the New Year Gala. All the teachers and students watched the gala online and offline to greet the new year.

At the party, the audience watched the 2021 New Year's greetings delivered by President Xi Jinping. 2020 is an unusual year. In the face of the sudden strike of COVID-19, all the Chinese stand united and join hands in fighting against the pandemic. They have achieved a series of success in building a moderately prosperous society overall and fighting a decisive battle against poverty. These achievements have greatly inspired the rank and file teachers and students at SCU.

2020 also saw the rapid development of SCU. During the year, the university focused on epidemic prevention and control on the one hand, and reform and development on the other hand. It has achieved fruitful results in various undertakings. The comprehensive strength and social influence of the university have been improved constantly, leading to a new situation in the development of a world-class university. At the New Year Gala, the university announced its "top ten news of Sichuan University in 2020". The top ten news comprehensively reviewed the achievements of the school in 2020 in terms of the Party building, personnel training, teaching staff, scientific research and social services.

The high spirited chorus "The Power with Me" kicked off the 2021 New Year Gala. The gala was divided into three acts.

The song "Yearning" by the university staff chorus sings in praise of the determination and ability of all Sichuan people to stick to their posts and forge ahead. The dance "Apricot Forest in Spring" takes apricot forest as a metaphor, and praises the lofty spirit of the medical workers to save lives and heal the wounded. The Sichuan University Student Art Troupe's original song "Flowers Still Bloom After Returning" expresses the students' positive attitude towards life in the face of the epidemic and their expectations for a better future.

In the act of "String Song is Good; Youth Blooms in Struggle", the dance "Voluntary Teaching in Big Mountains" vividly reflects that SCU students and teachers entered the depths of Daliang Mountain to ignite, with their own ideas and knowledge, the dreams and hopes of the children in the mountains for over 20 years.

In the “Video Interview of Award-winning Teachers and Students in 2020”, Wang Qi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Feng Xiaoming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Zhan Shichuang, Prof. Luo Maokang, Prof. Luan Rongsheng, Prof. Jiang Xia, chief physician Liang Zong’an, chief physician Jin Xiaodong, Associate Professor Yuan Dongzhi, Ji Jin and student representatives give their best wishes for the new year to all the teachers and students.

The third act, "A Hundred Years of Glory: Being Truthful to the Original Intention and Building a Dream for the Future", vividly interprets the spirit of SCU faculty and students keeping in mind the original intention and mission, and their selfless dedication. In the "2021 New Year's Greetings" video, teachers, students and staff expressed their best wishes for the motherland, alma mater and the new year in sincere terms.

The gala concluded in the chorus of "Singing in Praise of the Motherland". The university’s education TV station broadcast live the gala, and teachers and students, alumni and so forth inside and outside the university watched the 2021 New Year Gala on the education TV station, the university’s official microblog and other network platforms.

In the new year of 2021, SCU faculty, staff and students will stand united and work together to promote the development of a world-class university.
