The international students’ recitation competition of the 2019 Sichuan Province Chinese Classics Series was held in the auditorium of SCU Huiwen Building on May 28th. Vice Governor Xingping Yang of Sichuan Province, SCU President Yanrong Li and relevant departments heads attended this event.
SCU International students won four first prizes for their performances: “Qin Yuan Chun- Snow”, “Qiang Jin Jiu” “Sister Jiang’s Letter” and “Duan Ge Xing”. In addition, there were six second prizes and seven third prizes which went to international students from Southwest Jiaotong University, Sichuan Normal University, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, Sichuan Vocational and Technical College of Communications, Sichuan Institute of Industrial Technology, Chengdu Polytechnic, North Sichuan Medical College. Xingping Yang and Yanrong Li presented prizes to winners.
In his speech, Vice President Shijing Yan welcomed the international students on behalf of the university. He said that the Chinese classics are not only the spiritual home of the Chinese nation, but also the treasury of human civilization. It is a great contribution of the Chinese nation to the world. Since the beginning of the Belt and Road initiative, more and more international students have come to study in China. Sichuan University has become the most important university for overseas students in west China. As of the end of 2018, 3,851 students from 103 foreign countries had studied in 33 different colleges/schools of Sichuan University. Many international students who graduated from our university have become cultural envoys for the exchange between China and other countries, and they have made their own efforts for the integration and mutual learning of Chinese civilization and world civilization. Undertaking this event is an important activity for our university to spread Chinese culture. I hope that each individual international student can read Chinese classics, understand China and comprehend Chinese culture by virtue of Chinese classics recitation. In her speech, Guli Pali, deputy director of the provincial education department of Sichuan Province, said that the competition of the international student group was a great event for the integration and exchanges between Chinese and foreign cultures.
In recent years, Sichuan Province has stepped up its effort to disseminate and carry on excellent Chinese culture, attracting students from more than 100 countries to study in Sichuan every year. International students have become a bridge and link to promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. This recitation performance will set up an entirely new platform for Ba-shu culture to reach out to the whole world and inject, in the meantime, vitality and momentum into the education of international students.
A cheerful song chorus "We are together" kicked off the competition. International students from Ghana, Thailand, Malaysia, among other countries, expressed their love for China and Sichuan with lively songs and dances of their countries.
The performance concluded with the musical program “I love you, China” performed by SCU teachers.
