On December 21st, SCU symposium on the construction of key first-class academic subjects (groups) was conducted in Mingde Building of Wangjiang Campus. Present at the symposium were President Yanrong Li, Professor Yuquan Wei, Professor Anmin Li, academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Bi Shi, Professor Xingdong Zhang, academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhitian Luo, Sunqing Cao, two distinguished Professors, Vice President Shijing Yan, Vice President Weilin Xu, Vice Chairman Jing Jing, Vice President Bin Liang, chief scientists of 12 key academic subjects under the first-class status construction, and heads of relevant departments. Vice President Weilin Xu presided over the meeting.
At the symposium, chief scientists and subject leaders have made a speech respectively regarding the objectives of overall construction, the progress of core competitiveness indicators, representative results, next work plans and improvement measures. The speakers are Professor Yuquan Wei, Professor Guangxian Li, Professor Jinsong You, Professor Shunqing Cao, Professor Xuedong Zhou, Professor Chao Liu, Professor Zhitian Luo, Professor Weinian Zhang, Professor Jiuping Xu, Professor Xingdong Zhang, Professor Bi Shi and Professor Weimin Li. Individual experts have made a summery of the annual progress of core competitiveness indicators. After comparing these indicators with those at other first-class Chinese universities, they analyze the gaps and weaknesses and make suggestions on how to further boost the competitive edge of academic subjects based upon SCU characteristics. They are confident and determined to develop the academic subjects into first-class academic subjects as soon as possible.
President Yanrong Li delivers the concluding speech. On behalf of the university and Chairman Jianguo Wang who is on a business trip, he first thanks all the chief scientists and heads of relevant colleges for their hard work and phenomenal contributions in the past year. He points out that the first class construction of 12 key subjects (groups) is a collective decision after repeated discussions at the university. They embody substantially the overall strength of Sichuan University. The quality of their construction is related to the overall level of the "double first-class" construction of the university. In 2018, sound progress has been made in the discipline construction with the joint efforts of all of us. We have made progress to varying degrees in terms of the core indicators, doing a good job. The overall discipline construction is still quite challenging at the university, requiring greater effort in the new year. Finally, he stresses that we should raise the standard of work, create a first-class atmosphere, do a good job regarding core issues such as talents, projects, achievements and platforms, and work hard to improve core competitiveness.He urges the chief scientists and subject leaders to grasp the key link so that everything else will fall into its proper place. In particular, we should give high priority to the work concerning talents, attach great importance to the construction of a high-level talent team, and further improve the competitiveness and influence of SCU academic subjects. He calls on all to take the construction of a world first-class university as common cause, keep up with the hard work and efforts, have a strong sense of responsibility and mission, endeavoring to reach a new high.
