On March 25, the Department of Medical Imaging Technology of West China Hospital (DMIT of WCH), in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), officially opened an English course named Overview and Frontiers of Medical Imaging Technology. Lasting for 16 credit hours, this course will be offered by 26 senior frontline teachers from UPMC.

It is the first time for UPMC to offer such course worldwide in an all-online mode. It covers contents such as overview of UPMC imaging medical services, basis of X-ray, CT and MRI imaging, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, tele-radiology, humanistic care for imaging technicians, 3D printing in radiology, AI innovation of medical images and clinical research and innovation.

Professor Li Zhenlin, Director of the Department of Medical Imaging Technology, underlined the need of adhering to the training concept of“Elitism and Internationalization”, in an effort to actively build an international exchange and training platform for students. As a pilot program, it attempted to explore medical technology education reform, a step to make the students learn cutting-edge theoretical knowledge and imaging technology, strength their professional knowledge and skills, and enhance their independent learning and innovation ability; on the other hand, the program can improve the students’professional quality and language proficiency, broaden their international vision and bolster their ability of cross-cultural communication.

Jeffrey Bernstein, President of UPMC China, introduced the course and the team, including American teachers from UPMC and Chinese operation & maintenance personnel. Through nearly one year of course setting, formulation, adjustment and improvement, it's scheduled to bring new knowledge to the students, and spur them to innovate their thinking in the future.

In tune with SCU’s“Double First-class”development, this course will promote the internationalization of undergraduate education in medical imaging technology, and build a good platform for students while providing a reference for diversified online courses in the world.
