On January 16, SCU held a symposium on Polymer Materials Science and Engineering to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Xu Xi's birth. Xu Xi was an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Around 15,000 people attended the symposium either online or offline. They included representatives, experts and scholars from 30 Chinese universities and research intitutes. President Li Yanrong, vice presidents Li Rongjun and Zhang Lin, representatives from SCU’s various departments and representatives of Xu Xi's family members also attended the symposium. Xia Hesheng, secretary general of the conference and deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering(SKLPME), presided over the meeting.

In her speech, Wang Qi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the symposium, spoke of her keen memories of Prof. Xu Xi, extended a warm welcome to the guests, and expressed her heartfelt thanks to all those in attendance for their great support for SCU’s Polymer Materials Science.

In his speech, President Li Yanrong, on behalf of the university and Chairman Wang Jianguo, recalled memories of Prof. Xu Xi. He said that Prof. Xu is a famous scientist in the field of polymer materials in China. He is known as the "father of China's plastics" and the leader of Polymer Materials Science in the academic circles, and he has charted the course of polymer materials research at Sichuan University. He led the SCU Polymer Materials Science to develop into one of the largest scientific research and teaching bases with the characteristics of high performance and processing of polymer materials, which is first-class in China and well-known in the world. His deep affection for his motherland and spirit of pursuing excellence are worth inheriting and carrying forward by every teacher and student of SCU.

In his speech, Wang Dujin, director of the Academic Bureau of CAS and executive deputy director of the polymer discipline committee of the Chinese Chemical Society(CCS), said that the selfless dedication of the older generation of scientists, represented by Xu Xi，to the cause of science and education of the motherland is worth learning by every scientific and technological worker.

Zhu Wenwei, chairman of China Plastics Processing Industry Association(CPPIA), reviewed Prof. Xu's great contribution to China's polymer industry and plastics industry in his speech.

Dr. Xu Han, the representative of Xu's family and the eldest grandson, thanked Sichuan University and every hardworking organizer of the conference, guests from afar, as well as the predecessors and friends who participated in the conference in various conference venues and in front of the screen. In his speech, he reviewed Prof. Xu's academic life and scientific career, as well as his encouragement and trust to his family. He said that we would inherit and carry forward Prof. Xu’s lofty spirit and scientific cause and work together to create a better future.

At the conference, videos of "Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Academician Xu Xi's Birth" and "A Glimpse of Academician Xu Xi's Memorial Hall" were played, and the launching ceremony of "Academician Xu Xi's 100th Anniversary Album", Polymer Materials Science and Engineering and Oilfield Chemistry, journals established by Prof. Xu, were also held.

During the conference, a symposium on Polymer Materials Science and Engineering was also held. Profs Li Guangxian, Wang Yuzhong and Feng Yujun presided over the seminar. Pro Xu's students: Prof. Wang Qi, Prof. Xu Jian and Prof. Zheng Qiang, reported on the research work of learning and inheriting Prof. Xu's academic thoughts. Yang Wantai, Zhu Meifang, Chen Xuesi, Chul B Park and Jian Xigao spoke of the latest research progress and achievements in Polymer Materials Science and Engineering.

The meeting also held a ceremony of renaming and general election of board members of the Sichuan University Polymer Alumni Association(SCUPAA). Vice President Chu Liangyin, and responsible persons of the Sichuan University Alumni Association and SCUPAA attended the ceremony. At the ceremony, the official reply on the name change and the new term of SCUPAA was read out, and the flag was awarded to SCUPAA. Also, the SCUPAA president and executive president received a letter of appointment respectively.
