Being first launched in 1997, the “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition has become one of the most influential English debating competitions in China now. Being sponsored by Beijing Foreign Studies University and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the 22nd “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition has gone through three stages: campus selection, regional finals and national finals. In the regional final of West China in March, Sichuan University team ranked No. 1 in the circuit competitions and second place in the overall final and advanced to the national finals. With a wide range of topics ranging from “Should retaliation be taken in consideration when considering to reduce prison time?” to “Should conservationists support the development of nuclear energy?”, the national competition topics have touched upon heatedly debated issues of society, economy, culture and law. With only 15 minutes to prepare for the debating topic, the competition puts it on test contestants’ logical thinking and knowledge accumulation. The Sichuan University team has been highly appraised by the judges for its agile thinking, meticulous reasoning, rich knowledge and sharp refutation.
