Chen Lei and Cui Ningbo Won the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award

The 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award was unveiled, and an award ceremony was held at the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Summit of Young Scientists on November 12. 100 young scientific workers, who have made outstanding achievements in basic research, engineering science and technology, science popularization, achievement transformation, received this award. Professor Chen Lei and Professor Cui Ningbo of our university are two of the award winners.

The China Youth Science and Technology Award was established in 1987 on the proposal of older generation scientists such as Qian Xuesen and Zhu Guangya. Itis a biennial award for young sci-tech workers across the country with the purpose of commending the distinguished accomplishments achieved by Chinese scientists and promoting the field of science in the nation. The award is limited to 100 recipients each time, and nearly 1,500 people have won this award over the past 30 years.

Chen Lei, professor/chief physician of West China Hospital of Sichuan University

Chen Lei has long been engaged in the clinical diagnosis, treatment and research of epilepsy and plateau diseases, led a multidisciplinary research team, established an early warning model of seizures, and developed a non-invasive concentration detector of antiepileptic drugs. Besides, she formulated the medication standard of antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy, and proposed the standardized intervention plan for birth defects of offspring. Her other major achievements include a new mechanism of drug resistance in epilepsy from the perspective of "brain heart gut" axis; a new technology of treating epilepsy from the heart; the key technology system of precise diagnosis and treatment throughout the whole process of childbirth of epileptic women. Her innovative technology and scientific research achievements have served 200,000 women of childbearing age with epilepsy. She also presided over and completed 30 vertical projects including five National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and one major project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and published more than 100 papers in the capacity of the first or corresponding author in domestic and international journals.

Cui Ningbo, professor of College of Water Resource and Hydropower, Sichuan University

Cui Ningbo has long been engaged in the research on the theory of water-saving, quality improving and efficiency enhancing irrigation, and the modernization of irrigation districts. His achievements have been widely applied in the engineering field, providing important scientific and technological support for the development of water-saving, quality improving and efficiency enhancing irrigation technology in southern China and green and efficient water use in irrigation. His work has promoted the development of agricultural water science and engineering in China. In recent years, he has presided over more than ten projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published more than 160 papers (more than 70 papers were included in SCI, more than 50 first author/corresponding author papers, and three highly cited ESI papers); acquired 15 patents (one conversion) and 26 software copyrights as the first author or inventor.
