The opening ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students of Class 2024 were held grandly at the Jiang'an and Wangjiang campuses respectively on September 11 and 12, 2024. President Wang Jinsong warmly welcomed new students from all over the world on behalf of the university.
Integrated learning to create the future
At the opening ceremony of undergraduate students, President Wang pointed out that as the new "Sichuan University members", students should continue to inherit and promote the spirit of Sichuan University, strengthen integrated learning, master diverse knowledge, broaden international horizons, carry out multidimensional cooperation, and strive to grow into composite and top-notch innovative talent.
Integrated learning requires daring to innovate, daring to practice, and living up to the times and years. In the meantime, it is necessary to integrate multiple disciplines such as arts, science, engineering, and medicine. This is an era of "big science", and no discipline is an island. Sichuan University has a complete range of disciplines, including 13 disciplines such as arts, science, engineering, and medicine, which come together like water, providing a fertile ground for interdisciplinary integration and the cultivation of composite innovative talent. In addition, the President hopes that students will embrace the diverse world with an open, inclusive, and confident mindset, make full use of the university's international platform, and actively participate in various international academic research activities, make friends from all over the world, enhance cross-cultural communication skills, and strive to grow into talent with Chinese sentiments and a global perspective. The President also hopes that in future learning and life, everyone should have the confidence of "each is unique" and the heart of "sharing beauty", integrate into the collective, respect differences, treat themselves and others well, support each other and make progress together in cooperation.
Embark on the path of research with passion
At the opening ceremony of the graduate school, President Wang first shared with everyone the story of last year's Nobel laureate and American biochemist Katalin Karikó. He believes that it is Ms.Karikó's passion for academic research that has enabled her to persevere through numerous difficulties and ultimately achieve significant breakthroughs in science, making outstanding contributions to the development of human vaccines.
Subsequently, the President pointed out that academic research driven by passion requires a strong and stable core in order to nourish the courage to venture into "no man's land", overcome obstacles and long hardships, and enhance satisfaction and happiness. On this road, we need everyone to keep in heart their country and the world, take root deep and far, be good at cross integration, and always maintain a sense of awe. Pursuit stems from passion, and passion leads to achievement. He encouraged graduate students to keep in mind "the great things that concern the future of the country and the Party" and contribute their youthful strength to achieving high-level technological self-reliance and building modern civilization of the Chinese nation.
Finally, the President hopes that everyone can trigger a sustainable internal drive for academic research with love, constantly explore truth, seek truth, innovate, and climb new heights, and strive to write a youthful chapter that lives up to the great era.
