The fleeting years witness ceaseless endeavor. As we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, we extend warm New Year wishes on behalf of the university to all faculty, students, staff, retired colleagues, domestic and international alumni, and friends from all walks of life who have long cared for and supported the development of Sichuan University.
Time bears witness to the stories of struggle and records the footsteps of progress. The year 2023 marked the beginning of comprehensive implementation of the spirit of the Party's 20th National Congress and was a crucial year for Sichuan University to unite and drive towards high-quality development. Throughout the year, Sichuan University deeply studied and implemented the spirit of the Party's 20th National Congress. We conducted thorough education on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, transforming the Party's innovative theories into strong forces that solidify ideals, refine Party conduct, guide practice, and propel work forward. We studied to enrich our souls, enhance our wisdom, uphold righteousness, and facilitate action. Successfully convening the Second Plenary Session of the Ninth Party Committee, we meticulously planned and implemented "Thirty Measures" to accelerate high-quality development and serve the construction of a powerful nation, effectively answering the question of what Sichuan University should do for the great rejuvenation of the country.
Throughout this year, Sichuan University made continuous progress and emphasized internal strengths and practical effects in key areas. Our focus was on building top-notch leadership teams, first-rate Party organizations, and an excellent team of Party members, using high-quality Party building to lead high-quality development. The spirit of dedication, innovation, and entrepreneurship among cadres and staff was further bolstered. The scientific and refined management approach continued to enhance work quality and efficiency, with faculty, students, and staff flourishing. Firmly implementing the fundamental task of moral education and talent cultivation, we steadily enhanced the quality of talent development. The "Three Comprehensive Educations" and "Five Developments in Tandem" framework were improved, deepening reforms in enrollment and education, advancing reforms in doctoral and master's programs in engineering, and winning 14 national teaching achievement awards. The "Youth Writing the Youthful Chapter on the Land of the Motherland" thematic online propaganda and guidance activity for the main ideology of rejuvenating the nation were held, uniting the youthful strength for the country's revival. Continued implementation of the strategy of talent strong universities fostered high-level talents internally and externally. The organized scientific research contributed to self-reliance and strength in technology. Approvals for National Natural Science Foundation projects surpassed 700 for the first time, and our institution ranked among the top universities nationwide in terms of approved National Social Science Fund projects. Successful completion of the restructuring of three national key laboratories and the addition of two co-built national key laboratories. Five papers were published in prestigious journals like Science and Nature as the first authors from our institution.
During the year, while we focused on key tasks, we endeavored to shine in all aspects. We held a series of conferences to promote discipline construction, clarifying the construction approach of "Optimal Layout, Strong Foundation, Reinforcing Advantages, Cultivating Increment, Promoting Integration, and Seeking Breakthroughs" and introduced a first-class discipline construction promotion plan. We strengthened the construction of the Chinese Culture Research Institute, organized the Tianfu Chinese Culture Forum, established the Sanxingdui and Ancient Civilization Research Institute, and fully promoted the revision work of the national major cultural project, "The Dictionary of Chinese Characters." Successfully hosting the Sixth "Yangtze-Volga River" University Alliance Forum and welcoming visits from foreign dignitaries like the President of Chile contributed to our increased international influence. Actively integrating into the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, we accelerated in-depth cooperation between academia and prestigious companies, provided services for the Chengdu World University Games, officially opened the new museum building, and rolled out the XBB trivalent COVID vaccine, strengthening our contributions and support to society. We wholeheartedly worked for the best interests of faculty and students, and the future swimming pool was officially put into use, Huaxi Hospital officially took over as the university hospital, and the Jiang'an Kindergarten commenced enrollment, enhancing the sense of happiness and well-being among faculty and students. In 2023, all members of Sichuan University energetically moved forward, presenting a satisfactory answer with practical results for high-quality development.
The road to progress is not always smooth, and the glorious laurel is often intertwined with thorns. Building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics requires crossing barriers and overcoming obstacles, resembling an off-road race. But it is with higher goals in our hearts that we navigate through flatlands and high mountains, steadfast and composed. The spirited people of Sichuan University stride unceasingly forward, unafraid of storms, composing a brand new brilliance together.
The river of history rushes forward, and a new chapter quietly unfolds. In 2024, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and a crucial year for achieving the objectives of the 14th Five-Year Plan, all faculty, students, and staff will unite even more closely around the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core. We will deeply implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Party, take high-quality development as our lifeline, and with a more vigorous posture, more resolute actions, and more solid work, accelerate the construction of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, making new and greater contributions to the comprehensive construction of a socialist modernized country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation! Never stop chasing the wind or linger at the end of a tranquil journey; where the fields end, spring mountains emerge. In the new year, let us earnestly do every task well, take solid steps forward, jointly create a beautiful future for Sichuan University, and explore the limitless scenery together.
