On January 6, SCU held an annual meeting to summarize its scientific research in 2021 on Wangjiang campus. The meeting reviewed the scientific research work of the university in the past year and commended remarkable scientific research workers who had made outstanding contributions to the university. Chairman Wang Jianguo of the university council, President Li Yanrong, and all other leaders attended the meeting. CAS and CAE academicians Gao Jie, Zhang Xingdong, Shi Bi, Feng Xiaoming, Wang Yuzhong, Wang Qi; distinguished professors Cao Shunqing, Zhong Benhe, Zhan Shichuang and Huo Wei also attended the meeting. Liu Chao, director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development,delivered a report on the scientific research work of our university in 2021. He said that the university continued in 2021 to optimize the scientific and technological innovation chain of "direction - talent - platform - project – achievement”; launched the pilot plan of "Innovation 2035" to promote the improvement of the overall scientific research and innovation ability; carried out its social responsibility and served regional economic and social development with high quality. Moreover, the university established rules and regulations and optimized the environment for scientific research and innovation; The core indicators of scientific research such as scientific research funds, major and key projects, scientific research base construction and scientific and technological achievements have been significantly improved.
Fu Qilin, director of the Social Sciences Department, reported about the scientific research work of liberal arts in 2021. He said that in 2021, the university made new breakthroughs regarding the introduction of high-end liberal arts talent. The number of approved National Social Science Fund projects and scientific research funds reached a new high. Besides, the university vigorously promoted the "research plan on mutual learning among civilizations and global governance", improved the organized scientific research in liberal arts. Consequently, the strength of first-class liberal arts disciplines has been augmented as a whole.
Vice President Yao Leye read out the name list of winners of scientific research awards in 2021, including the excellent scientific research achievement award, excellent scientific research talent award, major project and platform organization award, scientific research base award, advanced scientific research management award, etc.

In his speech, President Li Yanrong, on behalf of the university and Chairman Wang Jianguo, thanked the rank and file scientific researchers who have made contributions to the scientific research at the university and congratulated all the award winners. He said that the essence of a university is to cultivate talent and create knowledge. The two cooperate and promote each other. In the past year, our university made important progress in scientific research, as well as new breakthroughs in major projects, scientific research funds, landmark achievements, talent team, achievement transformation, social services and cultural inheritance and innovation. As far as scientific research in the new era is concerned, he stressed that first, we should change the concept of scientific research as soon as possible, we must do "indomitable" scientific research, highlight the original innovation in basic research, and truly realize the breakthrough of "from 0 to 1". Second, we should try our best to improve the level and quality of scientific research. Specifically, our university should focus on the five pilot plans to solve major scientific problems and tackle key technical problems. Third, we should strive to become a national strategic scientific and technological force as soon as possible. Specifically, on the one hand, we should do organized and concentrated large-scale and complex scientific research, more closely focus on national strategies and major scientific and technological issues, form large teams, build large platforms, carry out integrated research, and strive to solve key core technical problems. On the other hand, we need to make good use of the "catalyst" of interdisciplinary integration, especially focus on "medicine +" and "information +" and take intelligent intersection as a breakthrough to promote the development of interdisciplinary integration. At the same time, we should emphasize promoting global governance and mutual learning among civilizations. We endeavor to become a high-end think tank that serves the national and local economic and social development and reflects the characteristics of Sichuan University.
In his speech, Vice President Chu Liangyin said that in 2021, the scientific research of our university has achieved fruitful results due to the strong leadership of the university’s Party committee and the joint efforts of the teaching staff of the university. 2022 is the year when the university will fully implement a new round of "double first-class" development. We should adhere to the "four orientations", continuously optimize the innovation chain of "direction- talent- platform- project- achievement", strengthen organized scientific research, vigorously improve the core competitiveness of the university, promoting the "two greatness" of the university.
