On September 11th, Nobel Chemistry Prize winner Ada Yonath visited Sichuan University and made a speech to faculties and students Next Generation Species Eco-Friendly Antibiotics”. President Yanrong Li met with Professor Ada Yonath and her delegation at Chengyilou Building. Present at the meeting were directors from the university, international affairs office and other research institutes.
Professor Ada Yonath is an outstanding Israeli scientist. She won a Wolf Prize in Chemistry foringenious structural discoveries of the ribosomal machinery of peptide-bond formation and the light-driven primary processes in photosynthesis in 2006. In addition, Professor Ada Yonath received theL'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards in 2008 for her research findings in bacterialresistence and won the NobelPrize in Chemistry for her contributions toprotein biosynthesis in the field of ribosomal crystallography in 2009.
On behalf of the university, President Li of SCU expresses his warm welcome to Professor Yonath and her delegation. He says that Sichuan University’s medicine and chemistry are well grounded and Professor Xiaoming Feng of College of Chemistry has won this year’s Future Science Prize, which is dubbed China’s Nobel Prize. He expects that both parties can deepen cooperation in medicine and chemistry.
Afterwards, Professor Ada Yonath makes a speech Next Generation Species Eco-Friendly Antibiotics in Chengyilou Building. After her speech, she has a talk with the students. The students seek her advice on issues such as “how to become a good researcher?”, “how to nurture an interest in scientific research?” and “How to overcome difficulties in scientific research?” and so on. Professor Yonath indicates that a good scientific research entails ardent interest and curiosity about science, deep thinking and study ability. And a strong team and a happy family are an important guarantee for success.
At the journalist interview after the speech, Professor Yonath suggests that Sichuan University is a very good university. The students are enthusiastic about scientific research. And SCU takes a long view regarding integration of multiple disciplines. The future science needs a large number of talents that are well grounded in multiple disciplines. Teamwork and cooperation among scientists that are well-grounded in multiple disciplines is an important vehicle for scientific innovations in the future.
