The Fourth SCU International Young Scholars Forum was held December 17th to 20th. By means of key-note reports, seminars, symposiums and inspections of different colleges and schools, SCU provided opportunities of academic exchanges for 160 young scholars from Cambridge University, Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, Nagoya University, University of Toronto, European Organization for Nuclear Research, etc. Chairman Jianguo Wang of the university council, President Yanrong Li, Professor Bi Shi, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice Chairman Xufeng Li of the university council, Vice President Bin Liang, and Yi Yang, Deputy Director ofChengdu Office of Talents, attended relevant activities of the forum.
At the forum, Jianguo Wan, on behalf of SCU faculty, staff and students, warmly welcomes young scholars from all over the world. He points out that SCU has done a great deal around the strategy to strengthen the university with talents in recent years. It has made every effort to build a career platform, working environment and living conditions conducive to the growth of talents. SCU has also intensified its effort to bring in high-level talents from across the world, and strived to provide fertile soil for the development of young talents in scientific research and academic achievements. Our university keeps holding the International Young Scholars Forum every year in order to allow young talents from all over the world to learn and acquire first-hand information about China, Sichuan and Sichuan University. We earnestly expect you to join Sichuan University after you have obtained a good knowledge of Sichuan University. We hope that you can serve our country in various ways, realize personal pursuit and self-fulfillment in the process of building SCU into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and an SCU style, making contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
SCU has trained a large number of high-level talents while implementing its strategy of strengthening the university with talents. According to the newly released national talent plan, two SCU members have receivedthe National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and nine Outstanding Youth Science Foundation funds. A special ceremony is held and Jianguo Wang presents a certificate of honor to each of the 11 young researchers.
At the instruction of Yuankun Hu, Minister of the Municipal Organizational Department and Chairman of the Talents Leadership Working Group, Ms. Yi Yang, on behalf of the Municipal Organizational Department and the Talents Office, welcomes the young scholars at the forum, expressing gratitude to friends from all walks of life for their long standing care about the development of Chengdu's talent development. She has expounded the local situation of Chengdu and the policy of attracting talents.
“It is good to choose a discipline that fits in with one’s personal academic background; it is probably better to go in for an interdisciplinary field.” That is the advice academician Bi Shi has for the young scholars when he introduces the characteristics of Chengdu and SCU based on his personal experience and the experiences of his research team. He encourages young scholars to strive for "academic titles", but not to overuse academic titles. He further calls on them to devote themselves to scientific research and make achievements at Sichuan University.
Vice President Bin Liang has introduced to young scholars about the status quo of SCU talent project and its policy to bring in talents. He points out that the SCU high-level academic community can provide global young scholars with an excellent academic environment and a good international atmosphere. The talent development system is advanced, open and competitive, which offers scientific career planning to global young scholars. Competitive pay and dependable logistical services serve as a guarantee for the development of young scholars. The quaint and modern campuses provide a good working environment.
At the discussion and exchange session, Yiwen Li from College of Polymer Science and Engineering, and Weidong Zhou from College of Literature and News have spoken, on behalf of SCU young scholars, about their experiences in choosing to create their own career and realize the value of life at Sichuan University, introducing the broad scientific research platform and strong support Sichuan University has for young talents to start their own career. Doctor Yijun Gao, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, United States, has made a speech, on behalf of the young scholars at the forum, expressing his admiration and determination to join SCU so that he can achieve his self-fulfillment in working for his motherland.
On the afternoon of 17th, SCU held a symposium for young scholar representatives at Mingde Building of Wangjiang Campus. President Yanrong Li speaks about two particular things: What kind of university is Sichuan University? Why is Sichuan University the right choice for a career? He stresses that the most important thing in the construction of a world first-class university is talents. SCU needs young talents more than ever before. And they are more than welcome to pursue a career in Sichuan University. SCU can provide young scholars with decent work environment, living conditions and quality healthcare through West China Hospital. It is fine if they cannot come right away. We would appreciate it if they can promote and recommend Sichuan University to others.
The three-day Global Youth Scholars Forum, with the theme of "gathering world's talents and creating world-class", continues to promote the image of "panda talents" to attract talents, expand the influence and popularity of SCU in the world. Working hand-in-hand with the school's overseas promotions and the 100-person program, this forum aims to tap and reach out to more outstanding talents and encourage them to join SCU. This time, nearly 700 outstanding young scholars from more than 100 internationally renowned universities and research institutes in 21 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Britain and Germany, signed up for the meeting. After recommendation and selection, the school selected more than 160 outstanding young talents who have made certain achievements in the field of research and have good development potentials to participate in the forum.
The forum is divided into subject exchanges, academic seminars at colleges, one-on-one orientation sessions, etc. It also organizes sight visits of Chengdu for young scholars to obtain first-hand experience with Chengdu and Sichuan University, nurturing a love of Sichuan University and intention to join SCU.
