A meeting to launch the connotation development project for liberal arts and science was held in Mingde Building on the afternoon of March 27. This meeting expounded the guiding principles in “ Some Opinions of Sichuan University on Further Promoting the Development of Subject Connotation ” ( hereinafter referred to as " Opinions ", in which specific measures are proposed for the connotation development for liberal arts, science, engineering and medicine of the university respectively ). Arrangements were made for individual key tasks concerning the development project according to the principal measures of “ Opinions ”. Weilin Xu, executive vice president, Shijing Yan and Liangyin Chu, vice presidents, and heads of relevant units attended the meeting. Weilin Xu presided over the meeting.
Weilin Xu pointed out that the three plans of liberal arts and science should be carried out along a clear main line, which can be summarized as long-term goals and short-term goals. The long-term goal of liberal arts is to nurture the teams and schools of thought in the field of humanities and social sciences at Sichuan University. The short-term goal is to build a high-level scientific research base. In the process of achieving the goal, we should do a good job in the construction of the existing bases and platforms, so as to lay a more solid foundation for a new research base and cutting-edge schools of thought. The long-term goal of science is to vigorously improve the innovation ability of basic research, and the short-term goal is to make it a norm the output of world-class original basic research results. In this process, we need to reinforce original research, conduct high-level international cooperation, and forge characteristics so as to produce top-notch research papers. He stressed that liberal arts and science should greatly strengthen their own connotation construction, and hoped that through the joint efforts of all of us, we can carry out the “Opinions” to the letter and generate fruitful results in the development of discipline connotation as soon as possible.
Shijing Yan gave a rundown of the main achievements of SCU liberal arts in recent years in the construction of talent team, interdisciplinary integration, national scientific research projects, awards for scientific research achievements, cultural heritage and innovation, and the construction of think tanks. Focusing on the implementation of the three measures for research base/platform promotion and development, and school cultivation in the "Opinions", he delivered a report and made arrangements. He emphasized that all colleges of liberal arts should attach great importance to the quality of project applications, scrutinize the application conditions, do a good job in management control in order to promote the prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences in our university.
Liangyin Chu first introduced about the specific contents and implementation trajectory of the three major plans in the “ Opinions ”, namely " science disciplines’ 'from 0 to 1' original research seedlings plan ", " cultivation plan of characteristics of science disciplines " and " high-end international cooperation support plan for science ". He then made arrangements for the construction of science disciplines from the four aspects of drawing up an implementation scheme of the " three major plans ", mobilizing the colleges of science to actively submit proposals, organizing experts to review projects and promoting the implementation of the plans. He stressed that further promoting the development of science connotation is an important measure of the university to actively respond to the call of the state and attach importance to basic research. Individual colleges of science ought to take this seriously and do a good job in implementing the “ three major plans ”, promoting to a higher level the development of science disciplines and talent training.
