President Li opened the meeting by extending a warm welcome to Lawrence Schovanec, noting that Sichuan University attaches a great deal of importance to internationalization; for the past seven years, in order to strengthen students’ international competitiveness, SCU has organized a “University Immersion Program” (UIP) every summer, allowing participating students from China and abroad to study together and build friendships across cultures. This year SCU has also launched its “Global Horizons” international student exchange program, granting more SCU students opportunities to study at leading universities around the world. SCU deeply values its cooperation with Texas Tech University, as Li further noted. Confident that this new agreement will serve to strengthen the partnership between the two universities in important areas, including educational and scientific collaboration, President Li also sees this cooperation as contributing to wider socio-economic progress in both countries.

Lawrence Schovanec thanked his hosts for the kind reception at SCU and pointed out that Sichuan University is currently one of the school’s most important international collaborative partners. According to Schovanec, the signing of the agreement with SCU represents an important move toward further internationalizing for Texas Tech University. President Schovanec hopes the agreement will also deepen understanding and strengthen collaboration between the two universities while benefitting both sides.

In the presence of the assembled guests, President Li and President Schovanec signed the cooperation agreement, each representing his school. The agreement stipulates that SCU and Texas Tech University will collaborate in scientific research, educational programs and other areas. Vice President of Texas Tech University, Joseph A. Heppert, and SCU Vice President Shijing Yan also joined the signing ceremony.
