At the opening ceremony of the 11th International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering(IUSBSE) on Dec.11-15, Professor Tian Weidong of West China School of Stomatology(WCSS) was awarded the honorary status of “Fellow, Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) ”. The candidates of this lifetime fellowship are recommended by biomaterials societies of different countries and selected by top experts in the world. All fellows are scientists who have gained a status of excellent professional standing and high achievements in the field of biomaterials science and engineering. Fellows are selected once every four years.

Tian Weidong is a second-class professor, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, and director of maxillofacial trauma and plastic surgery, WCSS, Sichuan University. He is also director of the National Joint Engineering Research Center of Oral Regenerative Medicine, director of Engineering Research Center of Oral Translational Medicine of the Ministry of Education, and the National Key Laboratory PI of Oral Disease Research. Been engaged in the research on the molecular mechanism of oral and maxillofacial soft and hard tissue regeneration and restoration for years, he has systematically studied the oral and maxillofacial soft and hard tissue defects and tooth loss, which are common clinical problems to be solved. In the study of the mechanism of tooth growth and development, he has proposed that adult local microenvironment can induce embryonic stem cells to differentiate into corresponding tissues. He took the lead in the research of adipose derived stem cells in China, studied the molecular mechanism of adipogenic, chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation of adipose derived stromal stem cells, vascularization of fat transplantation and stem cell mechanism of fat transplantation, providing new ideas for the transformation and application of adipose derived stem cells. So far, he has published 175 SCI articles and been selected into the list of "Most Cited Chinese Researchers" (Medicine) by Elsevier for 5 consecutive years. Moreover, he has obtained 19 national patents in his capacity as the first applicant, and won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, the first prize of Sichuan Province Science and Technology Progress Award (Natural Science) and the second prize of Sichuan Province Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award. He is also the chairman of the Chinese Society of Medical Science Research Administration of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA), vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Plastic Surgery, vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Cosmetology and Plastic Surgery CMA, vice chairman of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, vice chairman of China Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Surgery Committee, and director of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials.
