The Bashu Publishing House has recently published the Compilation of Research Literature on Chinese Classical Literary Theories in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as "Compilation"). This book is a key publication project of China’s 13th five-year plan. The editor of Compilation is Prof. Liu Wenyong of the College of Literature and Journalism, SCU.
Compilation is the hard work of Prof. Liu Wenyong who has spent 10 years compiling and editing articles on Chinese classical literary theories in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Compilation consists of 1,200 articles, which are grouped in 20 volumes in about 10 millions characters. Most of the articles are not found in publications after 1949. The articles are arranged by year in the Gregorian calendar. Prof. Liu has written his "editor's note" for each of the articles. This book is actually a chronicle of the research on Chinese classical literary theories in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. It can serve as a reference for today's scholars of Chinese classical literary theories and classical literature.
Moreover, Compilation includes articles on classical literary theories published in various periodicals and newspapers during the periods of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China (1900-1949). Monographs are not included in this collection. The selection criteria of articles vary with time: the earlier the period is, the more relaxed the selection criteria are; and vice versa. The reason is that the Chinese classical literary theories and the Chinese classical literature are intertwined and cannot be completely distinguished. Besides, in the early 20th century, classicism was still continuing, and modernity was already unfolding. At this early stage, some scholars did not have the literary concepts and literary theory concepts of modern people. Therefore, the selection criteria should be based on the specific situation.
