Professor Zhiyong Zong’s Team Discovers a New Strain Klebsiella Huaxiensis

Date:Oct 29, 2018

Recently, the pathogenic microorganism research team of Professor Zhiyong Zong has found a new klebsiella in clinical work. The team has named this new strain after Huaxi (West China in English) Hospital where it was discovered. Professor Zhiyong Zong of infectious diseases is Director of Infection Management at West China (Huaxi) Hospital. International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, an authoritative journal in bacterial taxonomy, has accepted and published this new discovery as Klebsiella Huaxiensis. Zhiyong Zong indicates that the publication means that the discovery and naming of this new strain has been recognized. This has been the first time when a new strain is named after Huaxi Hospital over the past decades.

Zhiyong Zong states, “The discovery means that we have identified a specific strain within a ‘group’ of bacteria. In the past we only knew that this group was made up of several similar bacteria.” He indicates that it is very important to identify specific strains in the treatment of diseases for the pathogenicity and drug resistance of different strains vary. The more accurate the study, the more accurate treatment options can be obtained in clinical treatment.
