The 2018 Chinese Medical Sciences Development Forum, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, was held in Beijing on the afternoon of December 19th. At the forum, 2018 Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics ( STEM ) was released and West China Hospital topped the list in overall strength six times consecutively.

In terms of fields of discipline, West China Hospital ranked the first place in nursing science, emergency medicine and urology; West China Hospital ranked the second place in psychiatry and respiratory diseases, and the third place in neurology, extrathoracic science, general surgery and osteology . The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences has already measured and reported the hospital science and technology capabilities for five consecutive years. The optimized concept of STEM was first proposed in 2018 based upon evalutaions of Chinese hospital science and technology influence since 2014. The STEM has evaluated 1,660 qualified AAA class hospitalsincluding military hospitals, traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, integrated Chinese and Western medicine hospitals this year. 828 hospitals are located in the east, 453 in the central area and 739 in the west. The evaluation results are divided into two parts: one is the comprehensive scientific and technological value; the other is the scientific and technological value of the discipline, covering 29 clinical medicine secondary disciplines and some tertiary disciplines such as cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease.
