The ‘One Hundred Schools of Thought Contend’ Forum on Discipline Construction and the 2017 China Hospitals Rankings Announcement Conference opened on Nov. 17th in Shanghai. Hospital administrators from across the country have got together to discuss “interdisciplinary integration" and witness the announcing of 2017 Rankings of Chinese hospitals. Lengxu Liu, associate director of Huaxi (West China) Hospital of Sichuan University was invited to attend the meeting, and the staff of respiratory and critical medicine, digestive medicine, anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, ultrasound diagnostics and related functional departments also participated.
At the discipline construction forum in the morning, Daiming Fan, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a speech “My Opinion on Discipline Construction”; and Deliang Wen, President of China Medical University, delivered a speech “Interdisciplinary Integration Promotes Discipline Innovation”. At the following round-table discussion, Lengxu Liu, Shuyang Zhang, deputy director of Peking Union Medical College, and Haipeng Xiao, director of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sen Yat-Sen ( Zhongshan ) University, exchanged ideas regarding the theme of “Planning, resource consolidation and coordination between medicine, teaching and research in the process of interdisciplinary integration”. In sharing the experience at Huaxi Hospital, Lengxu Liu indicated that interdisciplinary integration is the breakthrough whereby major scientific and technological achievements can be made, and is at the core of discipline construction. How to do a good job concerning the interdisciplinary integration? It depends on two aspects: one is the platform and the organizational construction, the other a reliable mechanism. Sichuan University and Huaxi Hospital have set up a scaffolding of interdisciplinary integration, and have optimized through innovation its organizational structure. Both parties have actively explored the guarantee mechanism for interdisciplinary integration. All these have provided a strong guarantee for innovative science and technology achievements.
In the afternoon, Xiechun Gao, director of Management Research Institute of Fudan University, announced the “2017 China Hospitals Rankings”. With a total score of 85.550, Huaxi Hospital again ranks No. 2 in comprehensive performance for nine consecutive years. Its research performance has got a full mark, ranking No.1 for nine consecutive years. Peking Union Medical College, SCU’s Huaxi Hospital and the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army are the top three on the list.
On the basis of “China Hospitals Specialty Reputation Rankings”, a new ranking “China Hospitals Specialty Comprehensive Rankings” has been initiated this year. And it is the biggest highlight. In addition to reputation, scientific research is taken into consideration in the evaluation this year. The scientific research score consists of a specialty’s input in research projects of National Natural Science Foundation and major national scientific research projects as well as its publication, scientific achievements in 2017.
According to the newly announced “2017 Regional Hospitals Comprehensive Strength Rankings”. SCU’s Huaxi Hospital has become No. 1 again with a full mark. According to the “2017 Regional Hospitals Specialty Reputation Rankings”, 31 out of 37 specialties at Huaxi Hospital have ranked No.1 in their respective field.
Drawing upon the “Best Hospitals Rankings” of the US, Fudan University’s Hospital Management Research Institute persists in its practice to focus on clinical disciplines levels and specialty reputations in addition to the scientific research output of the year. It has publicized its rankings for nine years since 2010. The rankings have been widely recognized among medical institutions for their scientific evaluations. The rankings have also become an important index for patients when they choose their preferred hospital for treatment of difficult and incurable diseases.
