SCU Biomaterial Achievement Is Showcased at “Great Change-Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up”

Date:Jan 4, 2019

At the grand exhibition "Great Change - Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-up" in the National Museum of China, the research achievement of SCU Biomaterials Research Center "Tissue Inducing Renewable Materials" is displayed in the fourth unit "Science and Technology Innovation Supporting the Dream of Great Power" of the fifth section "Great Power Meteorology".

Being co-sponsored by the Publicity Department of the CPC, the Central Reform Office, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce and Xinhua News Agency, “Great Change - Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-up” closely follows the 40-year history of reform and opening-up. The exhibition consists of six sections which showcase the glorious course and great achievements of reform and opening up in a multi-angle and panoramic way. As an outstanding representative of Sichuan University's scientific and technological innovation in recent years, tissue inducing renewable material is on view in this large exhibition. The university's scientific and technological workers' have persisted in climbing the scientific peak and making new breakthroughs in scientific research. This achievement epitomizes SCU support of the dream of a powerful country with scientific and technological innovation.

The exhibition states, “Being at the core of a new generation of biomaterials, tissue inducing renewable material has become the direction and frontier of biomaterials development. The Chinese scientific researchers have put forward the mechanism of osteoanagenesis using calcium phosphate ceramic and developed bone-inducing artificial bone products. They have proposed the seminal concept of “tissue inducing biomaterial”, opening up a new direction of biomaterials development. This biomaterial can be used to make artificial ligaments in the treatment of bone defect.”

The research team of Professor Xingdong Zhang of Sichuan University first discovered calcium phosphate ceramics bone induction in 1991. It was the first bone-induced artificial bone in the world and obtained evidence in the clinical application of nearly 300,000 cases. It has proved to have good curative effect.

T. Kokubo, a world famous biomaterial expert, remarks that this research finding “has marked the arrival of the revolutionary osteoanagenesis biomaterial”. (T. Kokubo, Biomaterials 25, 2004, 443–45)

Comments on Professor Xingdong Zhang's election (primary section: bioengineering; second section: materials. 2014, 2015) as foreign member of the U.S.A National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering are as follows: “Tissue inducing biomaterial” is a pioneering contribution tomusculoskeletal medical therapies in China and the world, leading the research and development of biomaterial product development.

On June 17th, renowned biomaterials experts from 17 countries and regions attended in the Biomaterials Definitions Meeting. And tissue inducing biomaterial was voted to be listed in Biomaterials Definitions for the 21st Century. The experts considered this material the concept of “the next generation of biomaterial”.  "Professor Xingdong Zhang has broken the doctrine that material can not induce tissue regeneration" and "opened up a revolutionary way to regenerate complex tissue".
