Eight Academic Subjects Have Been Ranked Among the Top 100 by Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

On July 17th, Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects published its 2018 ranking of academic subjects. This ranking covers 54 academic subjects in natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. 27 academic subjects of Sichuan University have been selected, with 8 being in the top 100 and 4 in the top 50.

This ranking system evaluates more than 4,000 world universities. 1,600 and some universities and colleges have made it to the ranking list in various categories. Sichuan University’s Biomedical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Stomatology, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Nano Science and Technology, and Pharmaceutics are ranked in the top 100 respectively. Biomedical Engineering ranks the 20th, Mining Engineering the 27th, Chemical Engineering the 42nd, and Stomatology the 47th.

Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) assesses and evaluates global universities for their performances in individual academic subjects. GRAS takes into account academic indicators such as the scope of scientific research, the quality of research work, international co-operation, scientific research achievements, international awards and prizes among others.Reference numbers and figures come from Web of Science and InCites, two databases of Clarivate Analytics. In its rating this year, GRAS has used, through its Academic Excellence Survey, information regarding 27 authoritative academic awards, 123 top academic and professional journals as well as representations at 14 most important academic conferences of computer sciences and engineering to measure a university’s academic performance. Academic Excellence Survey is a survey of college deans, department heads and research team leaders of world’s top 100 universities. In its survey, Shanghai Ranking has invited scholars to nominate top-notch journals and awards in their respective fields of study. And all participants agreed to release their names and work places to ensure the survey’s transparency and quality. Among the participants, there were quite a few well-known Chinese scholars.
