SCU Student Yafan Wang Wins Her First WTA Tour Title at Mexico Open

Date:Mar 7, 2019

At the Mexico Open Final in Acapulco last Saturday ( March 2nd ), Yafan Wang, a class 2017 student of SCU School of Public Administration, won her first WTA ( Women’s Tennis Association ) championship after she beat the young American star Sofia kenin. She will rank in the top 50 for the first time.

Yafan Wang is another Chinese woman tennis player who has won the women’s singles championship of WTA after Na Li, Jie Zheng, Zi Yan, Tiantian Sun, Shuai Zhang, Yingying Duan, Shuai Peng and Qiang Wang. This is the first time that a Chinese woman player has won a WTA singles title abroad since 2014 when Na Li won a WTA title.

Staying low-key from the very beginning, Yafan Wang has been making steady progress. She has finally made it to the top 50 at the Mexico Open when she shined. We look forward to more surprises in the future. Cheers for SCU students!
