Ambassadors of Five South Asian Countries Visited the University

On July 9, Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, the Nepalese ambassador to China; Mahbub Uz Zaman,the Ambassador of Bangladesh to China;Javed Ahmad Qaem, the Afghan ambassador to China; Moin ul Haque,the Pakistani ambassador to China; Dr. Palitha Kohona, the Sri Lanka ambassador to China and their delegations visited the university. President Li Yanrong met with the guests in the conference room of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy(SKLB). Wei Yuquan, director of SKLB and academician of CAS, Vice President Yao Leye, Li Weimin, Dean of West China School of Medicine (West China Hospital), and members of the delegations attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Yao Leye.

On behalf of the university, Li Yanrong welcomed the five ambassadors and their delegations. He indicated that Sichuan University is an important base for South Asia studies. The university has had good cooperation with the five countries of South Asia in recent years. The university has established the “One Belt, One Road” scholarship for students of these five countries to study at the university. He hoped that the five ambassadors would further promote exchanges and cooperation between Sichuan University and the South Asia countries, aiding the development of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

At the meeting, Li Weimin briefly introduced the situation of West China Hospital, in particular the medical assistance the hospital provided to Nepal after its big earthquake, active participation in the global COVID-19 prevention and control, and training of medical personnel for South Asian countries. Wei Yuquan briefly introduced the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy.

The five ambassadors thanked the university for the hospitable reception. They said that Sichuan University is a prestigious university with a long history and rich cultural deposits. In recent years, the university has made important contributions in terms of training South Asian students, South Asian cultural research, and medical assistance to South Asian countries. We hope to further deepen cooperation in personnel training, cultural exchanges, scientific research, medicine and health.

After the meeting, the delegations visited SKLB and learned about the research and development of certain pharmaceuticals.
