Laiming Jiang Published a Research Review in Progress in Materials Science

Date:Apr 17, 2023

Laiming Jiang, an associate research fellow of the College of Materials Science and Engineering of our university, recently published a review article titled "Emerging Ultrasonic Bioelectronics for Personalized Healthcare" inProgress in Materials Science, an authoritative journal of materials science. In this article, the author systematically reviewed the latest progress of emerging medical ultrasonic technology in recent years and predicted the future development based on the research progress of piezoelectric materials in the emerging ultrasonic bioelectronics for personalized medicine. Sichuan University is the only work unit of this article. Professor Jiagang Wu and Laiming Jiang from the College of Materials Science and Engineering are the corresponding authors, and Laiming Jiang is the first author.

The Health care industry has been developing in the direction of more specialization and diversification in order to meet the personalized needs of patients. The emergence of bioelectronics devices or platforms that can be operated by patients and monitor their own health conditions is fundamentally changing the medical field. “Emerging ultrasonic bioelectronics (UBEs) with wearable, implantable or highly integrated forms enable continuous health monitoring and on-demand medical therapy at the point of care, far more superior than traditional ultrasonic medical procedures, and are serving as the technical basis for the state-of-art personalized medicine.” (Abstract)

Recent advances in material design, manufacturing process, wireless power technology, digital communication and algorithms are accelerating integration, creating an unprecedented opportunity for these UBEs to become key components of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in the future.

“---Herein, we comprehensively review the recent progress in emerging UBEs, focusing on engineering methodologies and functional applications in personalized healthcare. First, the fundamentals of UBEs is briefed, followed by the latest advances in functional materials critical to the advent of emerging UBEs and the device structural designs for their wearable, implantable and multifunctional integrated applications. Next, exemplary cases of emerging UBEs in terms of their properties and diagnostic, monitoring and therapeutic functional applications based on ultrasonography and ultrasonic wireless powering and communication are highlighted and systematically discussed. Finally, current challenges and opportunities in the field to further improve accuracy, specificity, and system-level integration for personalized healthcare are outlined in detail.” (Abstract)

The research results of the team have appeared in journals such as NatureCommun,J Am Chem Soc,Adv Mater, Energy Environ Sci, and Adv Funct Mater,Progress in Materials Science is an authoritative academic journal in the field of materials science, which reviews the current status and future of the forefront of materials science and has significant influence in materials science.

This research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province, and Sichuan University (the Engineering Characteristic Team Project, the special fund for basic scientific research business expenses of central universities).
