Project Proposal Meeting on "Research on Important Aesthetic Issues Raised by Contemporary Art"

On March 13, a meeting was held for the 2020 major social science project “Research on Important Aesthetic Issues Raised by Contemporary Art" on Jiang’an campus. The leader of this project is Prof. ZhaoYiheng of the College of Literature and Journalism, SCU. Yao Leye, vice president of Sichuan University; Zhaojing, director of the planning office of Sichuan Federation of Social Sciences(SFSS); Fu Qilin, director of the Social Sciences Division of Sichuan University; Li Yi, dean of the College of Literature and Journalism, SCU, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Distinguished professor Cao Shunqing of SCU, Prof. Fu Xiuyan of the College of Arts of Jiangxi Normal University, and Prof. Zhou Xian of the College of Arts of Nanjing University, among others, also took part in this meeting. Due to the pandemic, the meeting was conducted online and offline simultaneously. The meeting was presided over by Professor Hu Yirong.

The project proposal meeting

At the meeting, Yao Leye first delivered a speech, congratulating Prof. Zhao Yiheng and the research team on winning the major bidding project of the National Social Science Foundation of China(NSSFC) again. He acclaimed the achievements of Prof. Zhao and his semiotics team in the past ten years, and wished the research team good luck and more achievements.

On behalf of SFSS, Zhao Jing congratulated the research team. She pointed out that the establishment and development of the project has unique academic value, application value and social significance. She hoped that the team would avail themselves of this opportunity to bring up a group of excellent backbone scholars and contribute to the development of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese features.

Fu Qilin affirmed the value of the project. He said that the Institute of Semiotics and Media Studies, Sichuan University has provided guidance for the development of new liberal arts and made outstanding contribution to China's academic development and dissemination to the world.

Next, Prof. Zhao, the chief expert of the project, introduced the overall idea of the project. He pointed out that the six issues contemporary art faces, including art industry, commodity and consumption, media technology, ecology and environment, and the transformation of traditional aesthetics, are not only artistic issues, but also major economic issues, social issues, educational issues, and scientific and technological issues. It is not only a challenge to the theory, but also ample attention to the reality when we deal with this series of major issues through "symbolic aesthetics".

Afterwards, six sub project leaders: Associate Professor Dong Minglai, Prof. Lu Zhenglan, Associate Professor Rao Guangxiang, Prof. Hu Yirong, Prof. Peng Jia and Dr. Yu Guanghua gave detailed reports to the experts on their sub projects.

After hearing the reports, the expert group members highly affirmed the problem-oriented awareness, interdisciplinary vision, theoretical innovation and pragmatic significance of the projects. At the same time, the experts expressed their earnest expectations of the researchers, and hoped that the researchers would establish a unique Chinese discourse and promote the development of Chinese art, Chinese aesthetics and semiotics.
